Walking in Authority: Like a Police Officer in Uniform
Luke 10:19
Scripture: “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” — Luke 10:19 (NKJV)
Introduction
Imagine a police officer standing in the middle of a busy road. Without any physical power to stop a moving vehicle, he simply raises his hand, and cars come to a halt. Why? Because he wears a uniform that represents the authority of the government. Drivers respect not just the person but the authority behind him.
As believers, we also carry authority—not from a government but from Jesus Christ Himself. Many Christians, however, do not walk in the authority given to them, much like a police officer who refuses to wear his uniform or enforce the law. Today, we will explore how spiritual authority works and how we must walk in it boldly.
- Authority Comes from the One Who Gives It • A police officer does not enforce the law in his own name—he operates under the authority of the government. • Likewise, our authority as believers comes from Jesus. Matthew 28:18 says, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” • When we act in Jesus’ name, we represent His kingdom, just as a police officer represents the law.
Application: Are you aware of the authority you carry as a child of God, or are you living as if you have no power over the enemy?
- Authority Must Be Exercised • A police officer’s uniform alone does not stop crime—he must enforce the law. • Many Christians know they have spiritual authority but fail to use it against the enemy. • Jesus said in Mark 16:17, “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons.” • We exercise authority through prayer, faith, and declaring God’s Word.
Application: Are you actively using your God-given authority, or are you allowing the enemy to operate freely in your life?
- The Enemy Recognizes Authority • If a random person tries to stop traffic, drivers will ignore him. But when a police officer in uniform does it, they obey. • The devil recognizes true spiritual authority. In Acts 19:15, demons said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?” to men trying to cast them out without true authority. • Walking in authority requires a close relationship with Christ, just as an officer must be backed by his government.
Application: Is your life aligned with Jesus so that the enemy recognizes your authority?
- Authority Provides Protection • A police officer has confidence because he knows the law backs him up. • Likewise, Jesus promises, “Nothing shall by any means hurt you” (Luke 10:19). • This does not mean we won’t face challenges, but it assures us that the enemy cannot defeat us when we stand in faith.
Application: Are you walking in confidence, knowing that God’s power protects you?
Conclusion: Walk in Your Authority
Just as a police officer enforces the law with boldness, believers must stand firm in the authority given by Christ. We must: • Recognize our authority comes from Jesus. • Exercise that authority through faith and prayer. • Live in obedience to Christ so the enemy recognizes our authority. • Walk in confidence, knowing we are protected by God.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the authority You have given us through Jesus Christ. Help us to walk boldly, exercise our faith, and stand firm against the enemy. Teach us to enforce Your kingdom’s power in our lives and to live as victorious believers. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
