When Love Came Down: From the Manger to the Tomb

Luke 2:1-7

Text:
Luke 2:1-7 (ESV)
“And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

Introduction

When we think of love, we often imagine comfort, joy, and peace. But the greatest love the world has ever known came down into rejection, hardship, and suffering. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, entered our world not to be celebrated, but to be rejected—so that we could be accepted.

⸻

1. No Room in the Inn - Rejected by Man

The story begins in Bethlehem, a city packed with people because of the census. Mary is about to give birth, and Joseph knocks on doors—only to hear: “No room.” The innkeeper didn’t know it, but he turned away the King of kings.

Jesus was rejected before He could even speak. He was born in a borrowed place, laid in a feeding trough. From the beginning, the world had no room for Him.

Many still live like that today—too busy, too distracted, or too proud to make room for Jesus.

⸻

2. A Manger Made of Stone - A Shadow of What’s to Come

The manger in ancient Israel was not a wooden crib, but often a hollowed-out stone used to hold food for animals. It’s ironic: the Bread of Life was placed in a feeding trough. He came to nourish a starving world.

That stone manger points forward—to another stone chamber. Jesus would be laid in a tomb, also hewn out of stone. At His birth, He was wrapped in swaddling clothes. At His death, He was wrapped in linen. His life began and ended in humility, but both moments were bursting with divine purpose.

⸻

3. Rejected by His Own - Rejected by His People

As Jesus grew, His rejection didn’t stop.

“He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.” (John 1:11)

The religious leaders scoffed at Him. The crowds turned on Him. Even His disciples abandoned Him.

He was falsely accused, beaten, and crucified—not for anything He had done wrong—but to fulfill God’s plan of redemption.

⸻

4. Rejected by the Father - So We Could Be Accepted

On the cross, Jesus cried out:

“My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46)

In that moment, Jesus experienced the ultimate rejection—the silence of His Father.

Why? So that you and I would never have to hear that silence.
He was rejected so we could be accepted. He was forsaken so we could be forgiven.

⸻

5. When Love Came Down

Love came down and took the lowest place. Born in poverty, buried in sorrow, but raised in power.

That’s the gospel: Jesus entered the world through a borrowed manger and exited it through a borrowed tomb—because neither could hold Him for long.

Because of His rejection, you are welcomed.
Because of His death, you are given life.
And because Love came down, you can now rise up.

⸻

Conclusion

Is there room in your heart for Jesus today? Or are you like the innkeeper, pushing Him to the margins?

He doesn’t need a palace—He only needs an open heart.

When Love came down, it came all the way down. But it didn’t stay there. And neither should we.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus, who was rejected so that we might be accepted. Thank You that from the manger to the tomb, every step of His journey was love in action. Help us to make room for Him in our hearts today. Let His love lift us up, transform us, and lead us into the fullness of life You offer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
