The Greatest Gift of All
Luke 2:10-11
Scripture: Luke 2:10-11 - “But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you, He is the Messiah, the Lord.’”
Introduction
Christmas is a season of joy, celebration, and giving. We exchange gifts with family and friends, decorate our homes, and gather in fellowship. But beyond all the festivities, Christmas is about the greatest gift ever given—the gift of Jesus Christ.
In Luke 2:10-11, the angel announced the birth of Jesus with a message of hope, joy, and salvation. This was not just any birth—it was God’s ultimate gift to humanity. Today, we will reflect on why Jesus is the greatest gift ever given and how we can receive and share this gift.
1. The Gift Was Given Out of Love
John 3:16 - “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Christmas is a reminder of God’s unconditional love. God did not send Jesus because we deserved Him, but because He loved us despite our sins. Jesus’ birth was the fulfillment of God’s promise to save His people.
- Love is the reason Jesus came.
- Love is the foundation of our faith.
- Love is what we are called to share with others this Christmas and always.
Christmas is not just about receiving gifts, it’s about receiving the love of God through Jesus and sharing that love with others.
2. The Gift Brings Great Joy
Luke 2:10 - “I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.”
The birth of Jesus is good news of great joy because it brings hope, peace, and salvation to a broken world.
- True joy is not found in material things but in knowing that we are loved by God.
- True joy is not temporary but eternal because it is rooted in Christ.
- True joy is for all people—rich or poor, young or old, sinner or saint.
No matter what challenges we face, we can rejoice because Jesus has come to bring light into our darkness, hope into our despair, and life into our souls.
3. The Gift Is a Savior for All
Luke 2:11 - “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you.”
The greatest need of humanity is salvation. Sin separated us from God, but Jesus came to reconcile us back to the Father. He was born to die, so that through His death and resurrection, we might have eternal life.
- Jesus came to save us from sin (Matthew 1:21).
- Jesus came to give us new life (John 10:10).
- Jesus came to restore our relationship with God (Romans 5:10).
This Christmas, we celebrate not just the birth of a baby in a manger, but the arrival of our Savior and King.
4. The Gift Must Be Received
John 1:12 - “Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.”
A gift must be received to be enjoyed. God has freely given us the gift of salvation through Jesus, but we must accept Him by faith.
- Receiving Jesus means believing in Him as Lord and Savior.
- Receiving Jesus means repenting of sin and turning to Him.
- Receiving Jesus means following Him daily in obedience and love.
Many people celebrate Christmas without Christ—they enjoy the lights, music, and gifts, but miss the true reason for the season. The greatest gift is not under a tree, but on a cross—Jesus Christ, who gave His life for us.
5. The Gift Should Be Shared
Matthew 28:19 - “Go and make disciples of all nations.”
The shepherds, after seeing Jesus, spread the good news (Luke 2:17). Likewise, when we have received the gift of Christ, we are called to share Him with others.
- Share the love of Christ with those who are lonely or hurting.
- Share the message of salvation with those who do not know Him.
- Share acts of kindness and generosity as a reflection of God’s love.
Christmas is not just a time for receiving but for giving—giving love, hope, and the message of Jesus to a world in need.
