Stepping into the New Year with Faith

Philippians 3:13-14

Scripture: Philippians 3:13-14 - “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Introduction

As we stand on the threshold of a new year, we look back at the past and forward to the future. The transition from one year to the next is a time of reflection, gratitude, and renewed commitment. It’s a moment to leave behind what holds us back and embrace the new opportunities God has in store.

The Apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 3:13-14 remind us that while the past has its place, our focus should be on pressing forward toward God’s calling. As we prepare to enter the new year, let us reflect on three key spiritual lessons: Letting Go of the Past, Embracing the Present, and Moving Forward with Faith.

1. Letting Go of the Past

“Forgetting what is behind…”

Many people enter a new year carrying the weight of past failures, disappointments, and regrets. But God calls us to let go of the past.

  • Let go of past failures - We all have things we wish we had done differently, but dwelling on them will not change them. Instead, we must bring them to God, seek His forgiveness, and move forward (1 John 1:9).
  • Let go of past hurts - Perhaps this year has been filled with pain, betrayal, or loss. While we cannot erase the past, we can choose to forgive, heal, and trust God for a new beginning (Ephesians 4:31-32).
  • Let go of past successes - Even our achievements should not make us complacent. God has greater things in store, and we must not allow past victories to make us settle when He is calling us higher.

Letting go does not mean forgetting, but rather releasing the past into God’s hands so that it no longer hinders our future.

2. Embracing the Present

“This one thing I do…”

Paul was focused. He didn’t let distractions or regrets slow him down. Likewise, as we enter the new year, we must focus on the present and live purposefully.

  • Be grateful - The present moment is a gift. Even with its challenges, God has blessed us. Gratitude shifts our perspective and prepares us to receive more from Him (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
  • Be faithful - God calls us to be good stewards of today. Whatever He has entrusted to us—our families, jobs, ministries—we must serve Him diligently (Colossians 3:23).
  • Be expectant - God is always working. As we stand on the edge of a new year, we should expect His guidance, provision, and power in our lives.

Each new day is an opportunity to walk in obedience, love, and faith. Let’s make the most of every moment God gives us.

3. Moving Forward with Faith

“I press on toward the goal…”

The Christian life is a journey, not a destination. Paul reminds us that we are called to move forward with our eyes fixed on Jesus. As we enter the new year, we must move forward in faith, trusting God’s plan for our lives.

  • Press on despite challenges - Trials will come, but we are called to persevere. God promises to give us strength for every battle (Isaiah 40:31).
  • Press on toward growth - The new year is an opportunity for spiritual renewal. We should commit to prayer, Bible study, and deeper intimacy with God (James 4:8).
  • Press on with purpose - God has a calling for each of us. This year, let’s seek His will and walk boldly in the direction He leads (Jeremiah 29:11).

The new year is not just about making resolutions—it’s about renewing our faith and commitment to the Lord.

Conclusion: A Year of Trusting God

As the clock strikes midnight, we are not just entering a new year—we are stepping into a new chapter of God’s plan for our lives. The past is behind us, the present is a gift, and the future is in His hands.

Let us go into this new year with:

  • ✔ A heart that lets go of the past
  • ✔ A mind that is focused on the present
  • ✔ A spirit that presses forward with faith

May we trust God completely, walk in His ways faithfully, and seek Him wholeheartedly in the year ahead.

Closing Prayer:

“Heavenly Father, as we step into this new year, we surrender our past, embrace Your presence, and trust You with our future. Lead us, guide us, and strengthen us to walk in Your will. May this be a year of growth, blessings, and deeper faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
