Hell Is Real
Luke 16:19-31
Scripture Text: Luke 16:19-31
Introduction
This devotional is about something we don’t like to think about, and many don’t want to believe in: hell. It’s not a popular topic, not a comfortable one—but it’s a biblical one. And as people of God, we must not ignore what Jesus clearly taught.
Jesus spoke more about hell than anyone else in Scripture—not because He was cruel, but because He was compassionate. Warning is a form of love.
I. Jesus Taught that Hell is Real
Luke 16:23 - “In Hades, where he was in torment…”
In the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, Jesus pulls back the curtain on the afterlife. The rich man, who lived selfishly and ignored the needs of others, dies and finds himself in torment—not metaphorical, not symbolic, but real suffering.
Notice:
- He is conscious.
- He remembers his life.
- He feels regret and agony.
- He begs for relief.
This is not a story of fiction. Jesus didn’t tell parables to lie—He told them to reveal truths in vivid form.
II. Hell Is a Place of Separation from God
2 Thessalonians 1:9 - “They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord.”
Hell is not just a place of fire—it is a place of separation from everything good, true, and beautiful, because it is separation from God Himself.
Think of the worst loneliness, the deepest emptiness, the most hopeless pain. Now imagine it never ending. That’s what Scripture describes. Not because God is mean—but because God is just.
III. People Choose Hell by Rejecting Christ
John 3:19 - “Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.”
God does not send people to hell in the way we often imagine. He honors their choice. C.S. Lewis once said, “The doors of hell are locked on the inside.” People choose darkness over light, pride over repentance, and self over the Savior.
But that’s not God’s desire.
2 Peter 3:9 tells us God is “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” Hell was not created for us—it was created for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41). But if we follow Satan’s rebellion, we share his end.
IV. The Cross Proves the Reality of Hell
Isaiah 53:5 - “He was pierced for our transgressions…”
Why did Jesus suffer so horrifically on the cross? Because He took our hell upon Himself. The punishment that should have been ours, He bore.
The reality of hell is most clearly seen at Calvary. If hell were not real, the cross would be excessive. But because hell is real, the cross becomes our great rescue.
V. You Don’t Have to Go There
Romans 6:23 - “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Here’s the good news: You don’t have to go to hell. That’s why the gospel is good news. Jesus came to save us—from sin, from death, from hell itself.
No matter who you are, what you’ve done, or how far you’ve wandered—if you turn to Jesus today, He will save you. Not might. Will.
Conclusion
Hell is real.
It is eternal.
It is terrible.
And it is avoidable.
We must not ignore this truth. We must not treat it lightly. And we must not keep it to ourselves.
Let this truth move us:
- To repentance, if we’re playing with sin.
- To gratitude, if we’re saved by grace.
- To urgency, if our loved ones don’t know Jesus.
Today's Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for telling us the truth, even when it’s hard. We acknowledge the reality of hell—not to live in fear, but to walk in the light.
Lord, convict our hearts where needed. Help us repent where we’ve strayed. And let us live with urgency, compassion, and boldness to share the message of salvation.
Thank You for the cross that rescues us from the punishment we deserve. We praise You for the hope of heaven and the gift of eternal life in Christ Jesus.
In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen.
