You Can’t Buy This: The Gift of the Holy Spirit
Acts 8:18-20
Text: Acts 8:18-20 (NIV)
“When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money and said, ‘Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.’
Peter answered: ‘May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!’”
Introduction
Simon the Sorcerer — Samaria’s most famous magician.
When Simon saw the apostles lay hands on people and the Holy Spirit actually showed up, he thought:
“Forget magic tricks… how much is that? I’ll pay cash.”
1. Magic Tricks vs. Miracle Power
Simon was used to the idea that power was something you buy, practice, and perform.
But here’s the difference:
- ✨ Magic is man-made. Miracles are God-given.
- 🎭 Magic entertains. Miracles transform.
📌 You can’t buy anointing on Amazon Prime.
The Holy Spirit isn’t a trick — He’s a Person.
And He shows up freely when we believe, not when we bribe.
2. Peter’s Priceless Clapback
Peter didn’t hesitate. He basically said:
“Your money and you can go straight to the junk heap.”
Translation:
“God’s gifts aren’t for sale. This isn’t a spiritual flea market.”
🧾 It’s a reminder for us too:
- You can’t tip your way to a miracle.
- You can’t donate your way into favor.
- The kingdom of God is grace-based, not price-based.
3. What Simon Got Wrong (And We Sometimes Do Too)
Simon saw the Holy Spirit as a power to use, rather than a Person to know.
And don’t we sometimes do the same?
- “If I’m extra good this week, maybe God will fix this.”
- “If I post enough Scripture memes, surely blessings will drop like confetti.”
- “If I up my church attendance, can I get that promotion?”
📌 But the Holy Spirit isn’t a vending machine.
He’s a gift, not a gadget.
Conclusion
Let’s not show up to church like Simon —
with a wallet in one hand and a bad idea in the other.
💡 God’s gifts are free, because Jesus already paid the price.
The Holy Spirit isn’t reserved for the wealthy, the worthy, or the well-connected —
He’s for the willing.
So:
- Don’t bargain — believe.
- Don’t offer a deal — offer your heart.
Closing Illustration
It’s like a kid walking into a bakery, pointing at a chocolate cake, and saying:
“I’ll trade you these three pebbles and a rubber band for that cake.”
The baker smiles and says:
“Son, the cake was already baked for you — your father paid for it this morning.”
🍰 That’s what grace is.
🕊 That’s what the Holy Spirit is.
Already paid for. Already offered. We just have to receive it.
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You that Your power isn’t for sale — because if it was, none of us could afford it. Help us not to bargain, perform, or try to earn what You’ve freely given. Teach us to receive by faith and to walk daily in the power of Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
