Called to Open Eyes

Acts 26:18

Scripture: Acts 26:18 (NIV) “To open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.”

Introduction In Acts 26, the Apostle Paul defends himself before King Agrippa, recounting his conversion and divine mission. In verse 18, Paul summarizes his calling: to bring the Gospel to the Gentiles, opening their eyes to move from darkness to light and from Satan's power to God. This verse encapsulates the mission that we, as believers, are also called to fulfill.

1. The Call to Open Eyes

  • Spiritual Blindness: Apart from Christ, people live in spiritual darkness, blinded by sin and deception.
  • Jesus as the Light: Christ is the light of the world (John 8:12), revealing God’s truth and love.
  • Our Role as Believers: Like Paul, we are called to share the Gospel and guide others toward Christ’s light.
  • Reflection: How can you reflect Christ’s light in your daily life?

2. From Darkness to Light

  • The Nature of Darkness: Represents sin, ignorance, and separation from God.
  • Transformation to Light: Accepting Christ leads to a life change in behavior, attitude, and perspective.
  • The Power of the Gospel: It dispels darkness and brings freedom and truth.
  • Reflection: Have you experienced this transformation in your life?

3. From the Power of Satan to God

  • Satan’s Power: Influences people through sin and deception (2 Corinthians 4:4).
  • Deliverance Through Christ: Jesus’ victory over sin and death sets us free.
  • Living in God’s Power: With the Holy Spirit’s guidance, we can resist Satan’s influence.
  • Reflection: Are there areas in your life where you need to experience freedom in Christ?

4. Receiving Forgiveness of Sins

  • The Need for Forgiveness: Sin separates us from God, but Christ’s sacrifice offers reconciliation.
  • The Power of Forgiveness: Cleanses us and gives us a new start (1 John 1:9).
  • Living in Forgiveness: Walk in the assurance of God’s grace and extend forgiveness to others.
  • Reflection: How does experiencing God’s forgiveness impact your relationships?

5. A Place Among the Sanctified

  • Sanctification: Being set apart for God’s purposes, both as a position and a process.
  • Community of Believers: Growing in faith together and reflecting Christ’s love.
  • Eternal Hope: Anticipating the fullness of God’s presence in heaven.
  • Reflection: Do you live as one set apart for God’s glory?

Conclusion Acts 26:18 captures Paul’s mission to open eyes, bring people from darkness to light, deliver them from Satan’s power, offer forgiveness, and provide a place among the sanctified. This mission extends to all believers as we share the Gospel and reflect Christ’s love.

Closing Prayer Father, thank You for the transformation that comes through the Gospel. We praise You for leading us from darkness to light and from Satan’s power to Your grace. Help us live in the fullness of Your forgiveness and reflect Your sanctifying work. Grant us boldness to share this hope with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
