The One Thing That Matters Most

Luke 10:41-42

Scripture: “And Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.’” — Luke 10:41-42 (NKJV)

Introduction

Life is full of distractions. We are constantly pulled in different directions—work, family, responsibilities, and the pressures of daily living. In Luke 10:38-42, we find two sisters, Martha and Mary, who responded differently to Jesus’ presence. Martha was busy serving, while Mary was sitting at Jesus’ feet, listening to His words.

When Martha complained that Mary was not helping, Jesus gently corrected her, saying, “One thing is needed.” Today, let’s explore what that “one thing” is and how we can choose it in our daily lives.

1. The Danger of Distractions

  • Martha was doing a good thing—serving Jesus—but she became so distracted and overwhelmed that she missed the most important thing.

  • Jesus said, “You are worried and troubled about many things.”

  • The enemy often uses busyness to keep us from closeness with God.

  • Matthew 6:33 reminds us: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

  • Reflection: Are you so busy with life’s responsibilities that you neglect time with Jesus?

2. The Priority of Sitting at Jesus’ Feet

  • Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen—a posture of humility, worship, and devotion.

  • Jesus called this “the good part,” meaning time in His presence is the most valuable thing.

  • In a world filled with noise, we must be intentional about spending time with Jesus through prayer, worship, and reading His Word.

  • Psalm 27:4 says, “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.”

  • Reflection: Do you prioritize time with Jesus, or is He often placed second to other things?

3. The Eternal Reward of Choosing Jesus

  • Jesus said that what Mary chose “will not be taken away from her.”

  • Worldly success, material things, and even ministry work will fade, but our relationship with Jesus lasts forever.

  • John 6:27 reminds us, “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life.”

  • We must build our lives on what truly matters—knowing and loving Jesus.

  • Reflection: Are you investing in what is eternal, or are you consumed by temporary things?

Conclusion: Choose the One Thing That Matters

  • Like Martha, we all have responsibilities, but we must not let them take priority over our time with Jesus.
  • Like Mary, we must choose to sit at His feet, listen, and grow in our relationship with Him.
  • In every season of life, let us remember that the presence of Jesus is our greatest treasure.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that only one thing is truly needed—time in Your presence. Help us not to be distracted by the busyness of life but to prioritize our relationship with You. Teach us to sit at Your feet daily, listen to Your voice, and grow in love for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
