The Cost of True Discipleship
Luke 9:23
Scripture: “Then He said to them all, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.’” — Luke 9:23 (NKJV)
Introduction
Following Jesus is more than just believing in Him—it is a call to a transformed life. In Luke 9:23, Jesus lays out the cost of discipleship in three powerful commands: deny yourself, take up your cross daily, and follow Him. This verse challenges us to examine what it truly means to be a disciple of Christ.
1. Deny Yourself - Surrendering to Christ
Jesus begins by saying, “Let him deny himself.” This means putting aside our own desires, ambitions, and self-centeredness to align ourselves with God’s will.
- Denying ourselves does not mean rejecting our identity but surrendering control to Christ.
- It means choosing God’s way over our own, even when it is difficult or uncomfortable.
- It requires humility, acknowledging that our lives belong to God.
Many people want the blessings of Jesus without the cost of discipleship. But true faith requires surrender. Are we willing to set aside our personal plans for the sake of God’s kingdom?
2. Take Up Your Cross Daily - Commitment in All Circumstances
In Jesus’ time, the cross was a symbol of suffering, shame, and death. When Jesus said, “Take up your cross daily,” He was calling His followers to a life of sacrifice and commitment.
- Taking up the cross means enduring hardships for the sake of Christ.
- It means daily dying to sin, selfishness, and worldly desires.
- It is a reminder that discipleship is not a one-time decision but a daily walk with Jesus.
Following Jesus is not always easy, but He gives us the strength to carry our cross. Are we willing to endure challenges and remain faithful no matter the cost?
3. Follow Me - A Life of Obedience
Jesus’ final command is simple yet profound: “Follow Me.” This means more than just admiration—it means walking in His footsteps.
- Following Jesus means obeying His teachings, even when they go against the world’s standards.
- It means trusting Him completely and seeking His guidance in every decision.
- It requires perseverance, knowing that He leads us to eternal life.
True discipleship is not just about words but about action. Are we truly following Jesus, or are we just observing from a distance?
Application: Living as a True Disciple
- Examine your heart: Are you holding onto anything that keeps you from fully surrendering to Christ?
- Make a daily commitment: Discipleship is a continuous journey, not a one-time choice.
- Trust God’s plan: Even when the path is difficult, remember that Jesus walks with you.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for calling us to follow You. Give us the strength to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and walk in obedience to Your will. Help us to trust You completely and remain faithful, even in times of difficulty. May our lives reflect the love and sacrifice of Jesus. In His name, we pray, Amen.
