Flip the Switch: Exercising Your God-Given Authority*

Romans 5:17

Text: “For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!” (Romans 5:17, NIV)

Introduction:

Many Christians live powerless lives because they fail to recognize the authority God has already given them. Just as a power company provides electricity, but we must flip the switch to access it, God has supplied us with His power, but it’s up to us to use it. Today’s message is a call to flip the switch and take responsibility for exercising your God-given authority.

I. Understanding Authority: The Right to Command (Matthew 10:1, Luke 10:19)

  • Definition of Authority: The right to command and cause things to change.
  • Jesus gave His disciples the authority to heal the sick, cast out demons, and raise the dead (Matthew 10:7-8).
  • God provides the power, we must take responsibility to use it.

Illustration: Just as a police officer has the authority to direct traffic, Christians have been given authority to command circumstances to align with God’s Word.

Key Text:

“Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” (Luke 10:19)

II. Authority Requires Responsibility (Psalm 89:34, Hebrews 1:3)

  • God will never take back the authority He has given us (Psalm 89:34).
  • Hebrews 1:3 reminds us that God’s Word upholds all things. If we are made in His image, our words carry power too.

Key Point: Authority without responsibility is meaningless. We must stop waiting on God to do what He has already given us the authority to do.

Illustration: Imagine having a car with a full tank of gas but refusing to drive because you’re waiting for someone to take the wheel. God has already handed you the keys—now it’s time to drive.

III. The Power of Your Words (Proverbs 18:21, Mark 11:22-24)

  • Proverbs 18:21: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”
  • Jesus demonstrated this by speaking to a fig tree (Mark 11:12-14). Even when the results weren’t visible immediately, the tree eventually withered (Mark 11:20).

Application: We need to speak directly to our problems. Stop talking about your problems to God and start speaking God’s promises over your problems.

5 Points on Speaking with Authority:

  1. Speak directly to your problems.
  2. Speak to your problems about your God, not to God about your problems.
  3. Use your authority instead of begging God for what He’s already provided.
  4. Praise God for the healing, provision, or breakthrough that is already yours.
  5. Walk around your house and speak life over every issue and problem.

IV. Cancel Negative Thoughts with Words (James 4:7, John 10:10)

  • Thoughts are canceled when we open our mouths.
  • The enemy will try to talk you out of your authority, but James 4:7 tells us to resist him, and he will flee.

Key Principle: When fear, doubt, or discouragement creeps in, speak God’s Word out loud. Your words have the power to shift the atmosphere.

V. Trusting God Even When You Don’t See Immediate Results (Mark 11:20)

  • Just because you don’t see results right away doesn’t mean your authority isn’t working.
  • Faith requires patience and persistence. Keep speaking and believing.

Illustration: A farmer doesn’t dig up his seeds to check if they’re growing. He trusts the process. Likewise, trust that when you exercise your authority, God’s power is at work.

Practical Steps to Flip the Switch:

  1. Identify the Problem: Name the issue you are facing.
  2. Speak God’s Word: Find a Scripture that addresses the problem and declare it.
  3. Command the Problem to Align with God’s Word: Speak directly to it with authority.
  4. Praise God for the Answer: Thank Him in advance for the manifestation of the solution.
  5. Stay Persistent: Even if you don’t see immediate results, keep speaking in faith.

Conclusion:

God has already given you the power to change your situation. He’s waiting on you to flip the switch and exercise your authority. Stop waiting for God to do what He’s empowered you to do.

Call to Action:

This week, walk around your house, your workplace, and your community speaking life and exercising your authority. Speak directly to every issue and declare God’s Word over it.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the authority You have given us through Jesus Christ. Help us to take responsibility and put that authority to use. Teach us to speak life, resist the enemy, and trust You even when we don’t see immediate results. We declare victory and breakthrough in every area of our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
