The Gift of Eternal Life

Romans 6:23

Scripture: Romans 6:23

Introduction:

Life is full of choices, and every choice has consequences. In Romans 6:23, Paul presents two ultimate realities—the wages of sin and the gift of God. This verse summarizes the entire message of the gospel, showing us the contrast between what we deserve and what God offers us through Christ.

Romans 6:23 says: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This verse teaches us three key truths:

  1. The Cost of Sin—Death
  2. The Grace of God—A Free Gift
  3. The Only Way—Through Jesus Christ

1. The Cost of Sin—Death

  • Paul says, “the wages of sin is death.”
  • Wages are something we earn, and sin earns us spiritual death, separation from God, and eternal judgment.
  • Every sin, whether small or great, has consequences.
  • Since all have sinned (Romans 3:23), all deserve this penalty.

Application:

  • Recognize that sin has serious consequences—it leads to death and destruction.
  • Do not be deceived into thinking sin has no cost, it always leads to separation from God.

2. The Grace of God—A Free Gift

  • The verse continues: “but the gift of God is eternal life.”
  • Unlike wages, a gift is not earned—it is freely given.
  • God, in His mercy, does not give us what we deserve.
  • He offers us eternal life.
  • This is a life filled with His presence, peace, and joy—both now and forever.

Application:

  • Salvation cannot be earned, it is a gift we must receive by faith.
  • Instead of trying to “work” for salvation, trust in God’s grace.

3. The Only Way—Through Jesus Christ

  • Paul makes it clear that eternal life comes only “in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
  • Jesus paid the penalty for our sins by dying on the cross.
  • Through His resurrection, He conquered death.
  • No other way leads to eternal life except through Him (John 14:6).

Application:

  • If you have not accepted Christ, do so today—He is the only way to eternal life.
  • If you are a believer, live in gratitude and share this good news with others.

Conclusion:

Romans 6:23 is a powerful summary of the gospel—sin leads to death, but God offers us the free gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ. The choice is clear: will we receive His gift or remain in sin?

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your amazing grace. We acknowledge that we deserve death because of our sin, but we are grateful for the gift of eternal life through Jesus. Help us to live in the freedom of Your grace and share this truth with others. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
