The Danger of Loving Wealth

1 Timothy 6:9

Scripture: 1 Timothy 6:9 (NIV)

“Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.”

Introduction

We live in a world where success is often measured by wealth, possessions, and status. Many believe that having more money will bring happiness and security. While wealth itself is not evil, the desire for riches can become dangerous. Paul warns in 1 Timothy 6:9 that those who pursue riches at all costs fall into temptation, harmful desires, and eventually destruction. Today, we will examine the dangers of loving wealth and how we can guard our hearts against its traps.

  1. The Temptation of Wealth

    • The Desire for Riches Can Lead to Compromise
      • Many people, in their pursuit of wealth, are tempted to compromise their values. They may engage in dishonesty, greed, or unethical behavior just to get ahead. Proverbs 28:20 warns, “A faithful person will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.”
    • Wealth Can Become an Idol
      • When riches become our ultimate goal, they replace God in our hearts. Jesus said in Matthew 6:24, “You cannot serve both God and money.” If our main focus is financial success, we risk turning away from God.
    • The False Promise of Wealth
      • Many believe that money will solve all their problems. Yet, wealth does not guarantee happiness or peace. Ecclesiastes 5:10 says, “Whoever loves money never has enough, whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income.” The more we have, the more we want.

Reflection: Are we placing our trust in wealth rather than in God?

  1. The Traps of Wealth

Paul describes wealth as a trap that can lead to destruction. Here are some common dangers:

    • Greed and Selfishness
      • The love of money can make us selfish, always wanting more while neglecting generosity. Instead of using wealth to bless others, some hoard it for themselves.
    • Anxiety and Fear
      • The pursuit of wealth can bring stress and worry. Instead of trusting in God’s provision, people become consumed with making and keeping money. Proverbs 11:28 says, “Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.”
    • Moral and Spiritual Destruction
      • The relentless desire for wealth has led many into corruption, crime, and broken relationships. Some have sacrificed their integrity, family, and even faith in their pursuit of riches.

Reflection: Are we falling into the traps of greed, selfishness, or anxiety over wealth?

  1. How to Avoid the Dangers of Wealth

    • Pursue Godliness Over Riches
      • Instead of chasing wealth, we should seek a godly life. 1 Timothy 6:6 reminds us, “Godliness with contentment is great gain.” True success comes from walking with God, not from financial prosperity.
    • Trust in God’s Provision
      • Jesus teaches in Matthew 6:31-33 not to worry about material needs but to seek God’s kingdom first. When we trust in Him, He provides for our needs.
    • Be Generous and Humble
      • Proverbs 3:9 says, “Honor the Lord with your wealth.” Instead of hoarding riches, we should use them to help others and advance God’s kingdom. Generosity protects us from greed and selfishness.

Reflection: Are we prioritizing God’s kingdom over material success?

Conclusion

Paul’s warning in 1 Timothy 6:9 is a call to examine our hearts. Wealth itself is not the problem—it’s our attitude toward it. The desire for riches can lead to temptation, traps, and destruction, but when we seek godliness, trust in God’s provision, and live generously, we find true fulfillment. Let us pursue eternal riches rather than temporary wealth, keeping our hearts focused on God.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that true wealth is found in You, not in material riches. Help us to avoid the temptations and traps of greed. Teach us to seek godliness, to trust in Your provision, and to use what You give us for Your glory. May we always put You first in our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
