The Righteous Shall Live by Faith
Galatians 3:11
Scripture:
“Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for ‘The righteous shall live by faith.’” - Galatians 3:11 (ESV)
Introduction
How can a person be made right with God? This question has been at the heart of human history. Some believe righteousness comes through religious rituals, moral living, or obedience to God’s law. But in Galatians 3:11, Paul clearly states that no one is justified by the law—instead, righteousness comes by faith.
This truth is foundational to the gospel. It was at the heart of the Reformation when Martin Luther rediscovered the doctrine of justification by faith alone. And it remains just as important for us today as we learn to trust in God’s grace rather than our own efforts.
1. The Failure of the Law to Justify
Paul makes it clear that the law cannot make us righteous before God. Why?
- The Law Reveals Our Sin: Romans 3:20 says, “Through the law comes knowledge of sin.” The law is like a mirror—it shows us our failures but cannot fix them.
- The Law Requires Perfection: James 2:10 says, “For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.” Even one sin makes us guilty before God.
- No One Can Keep the Law Perfectly: Romans 3:23 reminds us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” No human effort can meet God’s perfect standard.
If righteousness came through the law, then Jesus’ sacrifice would not have been necessary. But since no one can be justified by the law, God provided another way—faith in Christ.
2. The Righteous Shall Live by Faith
Paul quotes Habakkuk 2:4: “The righteous shall live by faith.” This means that:
- Faith, Not Works, Makes Us Righteous: Romans 1:17 echoes this truth—our standing before God depends on faith, not rule-keeping.
- Faith is Trusting in Christ’s Finished Work: Justification comes when we put our faith in what Jesus did on the cross, not in our own religious performance (2 Corinthians 5:21).
- Faith is a Way of Life, Not Just a One-Time Decision: Living by faith means continually depending on Christ every day, not just believing in Him once and then going back to striving in our own strength.
3. Walking in the Freedom of Faith
Since we are justified by faith and not by the law, how should we live?
- Reject Legalism: Don’t let religious rules replace your trust in Christ. Good works flow from faith, but they don’t earn salvation.
- Live with Confidence in Christ: You don’t have to live in fear of failing God. Your righteousness is secure in Jesus.
- Share the Gospel of Grace: Many people still believe they must earn their way to God. We are called to share the good news that righteousness comes by faith alone.
Conclusion
Galatians 3:11 is a powerful reminder that righteousness comes by faith, not by works. No one can be justified by the law, but through faith in Christ, we are made right with God. Let us live each day by faith, trusting in His grace rather than our own efforts.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of righteousness through faith in Christ. Help us to trust in Your grace and not in our own efforts. Teach us to walk by faith daily, relying on Your love and mercy. May our lives reflect the freedom and joy that come from being justified by faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
