The Tithe: Obedience, Blessing, and Trust in God's Provision
Malachi 3:8-10
Key Text:
“Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed Me, even this whole nation. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.” - Malachi 3:8-10
Introduction:
Tithing is an act of worship and obedience to God. In Malachi 3, God rebukes Israel for failing to give their tithes and offerings, calling it robbery. However, He also gives a great promise: if they return to Him in obedience, He will bless them abundantly.
Today, we will look at three key principles from this passage:
- Tithing is an act of obedience.
- Tithing brings blessings.
- Tithing requires faith and trust in God.
1. Tithing is an Act of Obedience
- “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me!”
- When we withhold our tithes, we are not just neglecting a duty—we are robbing God.
- Tithe means “tenth” - it is giving back 10% of what God has blessed us with.
Application: Are we holding back from God what is rightfully His? Tithing is an act of obedience that demonstrates our trust in His provision.
- Leviticus 27:30 - “A tithe of everything from the land… belongs to the Lord, it is holy to the Lord.”
- God doesn’t need our money, but tithing is a test of our faithfulness.
2. Tithing Brings Blessings
- “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse… and see if I will not open for you the windows of heaven.”
- God challenges His people to test Him—the only place in Scripture where He allows this!
- When we tithe, God promises to provide, protect, and bless.
Application: Have you experienced the blessings of tithing in your own life? When we honor God with our finances, He pours out His blessings upon us.
- Proverbs 3:9-10 - “Honor the Lord with your possessions… so your barns will be filled with plenty.”
- Many believers have experienced financial breakthroughs, provision, and unexpected blessings when they faithfully tithe.
3. Tithing Requires Faith and Trust in God
- Some people hesitate to tithe because they fear not having enough.
- Tithing shifts our trust from money to God. It acknowledges that He is our provider.
Application: Are you willing to trust God with your finances, even when it seems difficult? Tithing is an act of faith that demonstrates our dependence on Him.
- Matthew 6:33 - “Seek first the kingdom of God… and all these things shall be added to you.”
Conclusion:
Tithing is not about money—it is about obedience, trust, and worship. God calls us to give faithfully, and in return, He promises to bless abundantly.
Reflection Questions:
- Are you honoring God with your finances?
- Do you trust Him enough to give faithfully?
Closing Prayer:
Lord, thank You for being our provider. Help us to trust You in every area of our lives, including our finances. Teach us to give with faith and joy, knowing that You will provide for our needs. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
