The Devourer Rebuked: God's Protection Over Our Blessings
Malachi 3:11
*Key Text:
“And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, so that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,” says the Lord of hosts. - Malachi 3:11
Introduction:
Malachi 3:11 is a powerful promise that follows God’s call to faithful tithing in the previous verses. Not only does God promise to open the windows of heaven (Malachi 3:10), but He also guarantees protection from loss and destruction.
Many times, we focus on financial gain, but this verse highlights another important blessing of obedience: God’s protection over what He has given us.
Today, we will explore three key truths from this passage:
- God Rebukes the Devourer
- God Preserves Our Blessings
- God is Faithful to His Promises
1. God Rebukes the Devourer
- “I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes.”
- The “devourer” in ancient times referred to locusts, pests, or anything that destroyed crops, which were the people’s source of income.
- Today, the devourer can represent financial struggles, unnecessary expenses, losses, or spiritual attacks.
Application: What are the "devourers" in your life that are stealing your joy, peace, or resources? Are you trusting God to rebuke them and protect you?
- John 10:10 - “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.”
- When we honor God with our tithes, He takes responsibility for protecting what belongs to us.
2. God Preserves Our Blessings
- “So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground.”
- The enemy seeks to destroy the work of our hands.
- However, when we trust God with our finances and resources, He ensures that our labor is not wasted.
Application: Are you worried about losing what God has blessed you with? Remember that He is faithful to protect those who are obedient to Him.
- Psalm 1:3 - “He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season.”
- This applies not only to financial blessings but also to our health, family, career, and ministry.
3. God is Faithful to His Promises
- “Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field.”
- God ensures that what He has given us produces results.
- If we remain faithful in our giving and trust in Him, He will ensure that we bear fruit in every season.
Application: Do you believe that God will keep His promises to you? When we honor Him with our finances, we can trust that He will bless us and protect us in all areas of life.
- Philippians 4:19 - “And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
Conclusion:
Malachi 3:11 teaches us that when we faithfully give to God, He does not just bless us—He protects us. He rebukes the enemy, preserves our blessings, and ensures that our efforts bear fruit.
Reflection Questions:
- Are you trusting God not just for provision, but also for protection?
- How can you grow in faithfulness in giving?
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your promise to protect and provide for us. Help us to trust You fully in our giving, knowing that You will rebuke the devourer and preserve our blessings. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
