Goodness : Fruit Of The Spirit

Galatians 5:22-23

Text: Galatians 5:22-23

Introduction
Goodness is a word we hear often, but as a fruit of the Spirit, it goes far deeper than just being nice.
It’s about reflecting the moral excellence and compassion of God in a world full of compromise.
Let’s explore what goodness truly means and how the Spirit grows it in our lives.

1. What Is Goodness?
The Greek word for goodness (agathosune) speaks of moral virtue and active kindness.
It’s not just about avoiding bad behavior—it’s about doing what’s right, even when it costs us something.
Goodness is love in action, rooted in God’s nature.

Romans 15:14 tells us believers should be “full of goodness.”
This isn’t human effort—it’s the Spirit’s work in us, shaping our character to look more like Christ.

2. Why Is Goodness Important?

  • It Reflects God’s Character
When Moses asked to see God’s glory, God showed him His goodness (Exodus 33:19).
Goodness isn’t just something God does—it’s who He is.

  • It Reveals Christ to the World
Acts 10:38 says Jesus “went around doing good.”
His life was a walking testimony of divine goodness.
When we live with goodness, we become walking billboards for Jesus.

  • It Has Influence
Jesus told us in Matthew 5:16 to let our light shine through good deeds so others would glorify God.
Goodness opens hearts and builds credibility for the Gospel.

3. Goodness vs. Moralism
Goodness is not just moral behavior.
The Pharisees were moral but lacked compassion.
In Luke 18, Jesus tells of a Pharisee and a tax collector.
One tried to look good, the other sought God’s mercy.
Real goodness is humble, not self-righteous.

4. How to Grow in Goodness

  • Stay Connected to the Spirit
    Goodness is fruit, not performance.
Jesus said in John 15:5, “If you remain in me, you will bear much fruit.”
The Spirit grows goodness as we remain in Christ.

  • Choose What’s Right, Not Easy
Romans 12:21 says, “Overcome evil with good.”
That means taking the high road—honesty over shortcuts, integrity over convenience.

  • Do Good to Others
Galatians 6:10 — “As we have opportunity, let us do good to all people.”
We serve a good God—let’s show it by serving people around us.

  • Guard Your Heart
Proverbs 4:23 reminds us that everything flows from our hearts.
The Spirit transforms us from the inside out so that goodness becomes a natural overflow.

5. Practical Examples

  • At Work: Be dependable, honest, and gracious—even when others aren’t.
  • At Home: Show goodness by listening, forgiving quickly, and serving selflessly.
  • In the Community: Be known not for complaints but for compassion.
    Offer help without expecting credit.

Conclusion
Goodness isn’t perfection—it’s a posture of the heart.
It’s the Spirit’s work in us, changing how we think, speak, and act.
In a world full of self-interest, goodness stands out.
It draws people to the light of Christ in us.

Let’s ask the Holy Spirit to make us people who live and breathe the goodness of God—
not for applause, but for His glory.

Prayer
Father,
Thank You for Your perfect goodness.
Help us to reflect that goodness in every part of our lives.
Holy Spirit, grow this fruit in us so the world may see You through us.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
