Righteousness Through Faith in Christ
Romans 3:21-26
Introduction
Many people believe that righteousness—being right with God—comes through good works, religious rituals, or moral living. But Romans 3 teaches a powerful truth: righteousness comes by faith, not by works. Today, we will explore this theme through three key points:
- Righteousness Apart from the Law
- Faith in Jesus Christ for All
- Justification by Grace
1. Righteousness Apart from the Law
Romans 3:21 - “But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.”
Paul declares that righteousness does not come through keeping the law. The Old Testament (the Law and Prophets) pointed toward God’s plan for salvation, but the law itself could not make anyone righteous. Instead, it revealed humanity’s sin and need for a Savior (Romans 3:20).
- Application:
- We must not rely on our own efforts to be right with God.
- The law shows us our sin, but only God’s grace can save us.
2. Faith in Jesus Christ for All
Romans 3:22-23 - “This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Paul makes it clear—righteousness is available to everyone through faith. No one can claim righteousness by their own merit because all have sinned. Faith in Christ is the only way to be justified before God.
- Application:
- Faith in Christ, not religious background or good deeds, makes us right with God.
- Salvation is for everyone—regardless of race, status, or past mistakes.
3. Justification by Grace
Romans 3:24-26 - “And all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”
Justification means being declared righteous before God. This is not something we earn—it is freely given by grace. Jesus paid the price for our sins through His sacrificial death, satisfying God’s justice while offering us mercy.
- Application:
- Do not trust in works—trust in Christ alone.
- Live in gratitude, knowing your righteousness is a gift from God.
Conclusion
Romans 3 teaches that righteousness does not come from the law or human effort but through faith in Jesus Christ. We are all sinners in need of grace, and God freely justifies us through Jesus’ sacrifice. Let us place our full trust in Him and live as people redeemed by His grace.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of righteousness through faith in Jesus. Help us to trust in Your grace and not our own works. Strengthen our faith so that we may live for You each day. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
