The Blessing of Generosity

Luke 6:38

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” - Luke 6:38

Introduction:

In Luke 6:38, Jesus speaks about the power of generosity. He promises that when we give, God will not only return what we give but will overflow blessings back to us. This is not a simple exchange but a divine principle rooted in God’s abundant love and provision. Today, we will explore:

  1. The Principle of Giving
  2. God’s Abundant Blessing
  3. The Measure of Generosity

1. The Principle of Giving

  • Jesus starts with a command: “Give.” This is a clear call to action.
  • Giving is an essential part of the Christian life. It is not limited to money but encompasses time, love, service, and kindness.
  • Jesus teaches that giving should be unselfish, cheerful, and sacrificial. It reflects our trust in God to meet our needs.

Application: Are we giving in a way that reflects God’s love and provision, or are we holding back, fearful of what we might lose?

2. God’s Abundant Blessing

  • Jesus promises that when we give, we will receive a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. This imagery emphasizes abundance.
  • In ancient times, when grain was sold, it would be shaken to fit more in the container. This phrase speaks of God’s generosity that goes beyond what we expect.
  • God promises that our acts of generosity are met with overflowing blessings. These blessings come in many forms—spiritual, emotional, financial, and relational.

Application: Do we believe that God will bless us abundantly when we give generously? Do we trust that He will provide for our needs as we serve others?

3. The Measure of Generosity

  • The final part of Jesus’ statement is sobering: “For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
  • Our generosity toward others is a reflection of our trust in God’s ability to provide. If we give generously, God will return blessings in proportion to the measure we use.
  • This is a principle of sowing and reaping (2 Corinthians 9:6). What we sow in the lives of others will be returned to us—not just in kind, but in greater measure.

Application: Are we holding back in our giving because of fear or insecurity? How can we increase our generosity, knowing that God will bless us in return?

Conclusion:

Luke 6:38 reveals that generosity is a gateway to receiving God’s abundant blessings. When we give, we reflect God’s nature, who gives freely and without measure. We are called to be givers, not just of material things, but also of our time, love, and care for others.

Let us remember that giving is not just about the act itself, but about trusting in God’s provision and reflecting His love and abundance to those around us. May we give freely, knowing that God’s blessings will return to us in greater measure.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How can I grow in my generosity toward others?
  2. Am I trusting God to meet my needs as I give, or am I holding back out of fear?
  3. What areas of my life could I be more generous with (time, resources, love)?

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your abundant blessings. Help us to live with open hands, giving generously to others, knowing that You will provide for all our needs. Teach us to reflect Your love and grace in our actions and to trust in Your promises. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
