Seeking Guidance from the True Source

Leviticus 20:6

Text: Leviticus 20:6 (NIV) — “I will set my face against anyone who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute themselves by following them, and I will cut them off from their people.”

I. Introduction

  • Life often presents us with difficult decisions and uncertainties. We face challenges, crossroads, and moments when we feel lost or confused.
  • In such moments, it is natural to seek guidance and wisdom. But where do we turn? To whom do we entrust our hearts and minds?
  • In Leviticus 20:6, God warns His people not to seek wisdom from mediums and spiritists but to remain faithful to Him. He calls them to trust in Him alone for guidance and direction.

Illustration: In today’s world, many seek answers from astrology, psychics, tarot cards, and even social media influencers, placing their trust in human or demonic sources rather than in God. We are bombarded with messages and advice from all directions, but not all sources are trustworthy or reliable.

II. The Danger of Seeking Guidance from False Sources

  1. Rebellion Against God’s Sovereignty

    • God created us to depend on Him for wisdom (Proverbs 3:5-6). He is the source of all truth, knowledge, and understanding. When we turn to other sources for guidance, we are essentially rejecting God's authority and sovereignty over our lives.
    • Seeking other spiritual sources is an act of rebellion, likened to “prostitution” in this passage—a betrayal of God’s covenant and a turning away from His love and provision.
  2. Spiritual Consequences

    • God warns that those who seek guidance from false sources will face His judgment. This is not because He is harsh or unforgiving, but because He loves us and wants to protect us from harm.
    • Spiritual practices outside of God’s will open the door to confusion, deception, and spiritual bondage (Ephesians 6:12). They can lead us away from God and into darkness.

Application: Reflect on where you seek wisdom when faced with life’s challenges. Do you turn to horoscopes, fortune-telling, or worldly advice instead of God? Are you placing your trust in unreliable sources, or are you seeking the One who holds all wisdom and knowledge?

III. God’s Desire for a Pure and Holy Relationship

  1. God’s Holiness Requires Our Loyalty

    • God called Israel to be a holy nation, set apart for Him (Leviticus 11:45). He desired a people who would be devoted to Him alone, reflecting His holiness and purity in their lives.
    • As believers in Christ, we are called to the same holiness (1 Peter 1:16). We are to be set apart from the world, living lives that are pleasing to God and reflect His character.
  2. God’s Jealous Love

    • God’s warning in this passage is rooted in His love for His people. He is jealous for our affection and devotion, just as a loving spouse desires faithfulness and loyalty.
    • He wants us to experience the fullness of His love and blessings, and that can only happen when we are fully devoted to Him.

Illustration: A marriage cannot thrive if one partner is seeking intimacy and fulfillment elsewhere. It requires trust, loyalty, and a commitment to one another. Our relationship with God works the same way. He desires our undivided devotion and faithfulness.

IV. The Path Back to God Through Repentance

  1. Confess and Turn Away

    • If you have sought guidance from false sources, God's grace is available for you when you repent (1 John 1:9). He is ready to forgive and restore you when you turn away from your sin and turn back to Him.
    • Acknowledge and renounce any involvement in ungodly spiritual practices. Confess your sin to God, and ask for His forgiveness and cleansing.
  2. Seek God’s Guidance through His Word and Spirit

    • James 1:5 promises that God will give wisdom generously to those who ask. He is the source of all wisdom, and He is eager to guide us in His ways.
    • The Holy Spirit is our guide and counselor (John 16:13). He illuminates God's Word, speaks to our hearts, and leads us into truth.

Illustration: Imagine navigating a dark and treacherous path without a flashlight. You would stumble, fall, and lose your way. God’s Word is the light we need to guide us on our journey (Psalm 119:105). The Holy Spirit is the flashlight that illuminates the path, helping us to see clearly and avoid danger.

V. Victory in Christ

  • Through Jesus, we are set free from sin and empowered to live holy lives. His sacrifice on the cross broke the power of sin and death, and His resurrection gives us new life and victory over the enemy.
  • Colossians 2:15 reminds us that Christ has disarmed the spiritual powers and triumphed over them. We no longer need to fear the enemy or seek guidance from false sources.
  • We have the ultimate source of wisdom and guidance in Jesus Christ. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6).

Invitation:

  • I encourage you to examine your heart today. Are there any areas where you have been seeking guidance from sources other than God? Are you placing your trust in things that cannot truly satisfy or provide lasting wisdom?
  • If so, I invite you to repent and renew your commitment to seek God’s guidance alone. Turn away from false sources of wisdom, and turn towards the One who holds all truth and knowledge.

VI. Conclusion

  • God wants a deep and faithful relationship with His people. He desires our undivided devotion and trust.
  • Trust Him as your source of wisdom, guidance, and peace. He will never lead you astray, and He will always provide for your needs.
  • Let us commit to seeking His face, listening to His voice, and following His ways. May we be a people who are known for our unwavering faith and our reliance on the true source of wisdom and guidance.

Prayer:

Lord, we thank You that You are the source of all wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Forgive us for the times when we have sought guidance from false sources. Help us to turn away from those things and to seek You with all our hearts. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, and guide us in Your truth. In Jesus' name, Amen.
