Turning to God, Not the World for Guidance

Leviticus 20:6

Text: Leviticus 20:6 (NIV) — “I will set my face against anyone who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute themselves by following them, and I will cut them off from their people.”

I. Introduction

  • Life often presents us with difficult decisions and uncertainties. We face challenges, crossroads, and moments when we feel lost or confused, unsure of which path to take.
  • In such moments, it is natural to seek guidance and wisdom. We long for answers, direction, and reassurance. But where do we turn? To whom do we entrust our hearts and minds?
  • In Leviticus 20:6, God warns His people not to seek wisdom from mediums and spiritists but to remain faithful to Him. He calls them to trust in Him alone for guidance and direction, for He is the true source of wisdom and knowledge.

Illustration: In today’s world, many seek answers from astrology, psychics, tarot cards, and even social media influencers, placing their trust in human or demonic sources rather than in God. We are bombarded with messages and advice from all directions, but not all sources are trustworthy or reliable. Some may seem harmless, but they can lead us away from God and into spiritual danger.

II. The Danger of Seeking Guidance from False Sources

  1. Rebellion Against God’s Sovereignty

    • God created us to depend on Him for wisdom (Proverbs 3:5-6). He is the source of all truth, knowledge, and understanding. When we turn to other sources for guidance, we are essentially rejecting God's authority and sovereignty over our lives. We are saying, "I don't trust you, God, I'll find my own way."
    • Seeking other spiritual sources is an act of rebellion, likened to “prostitution” in this passage—a betrayal of God’s covenant and a turning away from His love and provision. It is a spiritual adultery, a breaking of our relationship with God.
  2. Spiritual Consequences

    • God warns that those who seek guidance from false sources will face His judgment. This is not because He is harsh or unforgiving, but because He loves us and wants to protect us from harm. He knows that turning away from Him will lead to pain, confusion, and ultimately, separation from Him.
    • Spiritual practices outside of God’s will open the door to confusion, deception, and spiritual bondage (Ephesians 6:12). They can lead us away from God's truth and into darkness, where we become vulnerable to the enemy's attacks.

Application: Reflect on where you seek wisdom when faced with life’s challenges. Do you turn to horoscopes, fortune-telling, or worldly advice instead of God? Are you placing your trust in unreliable sources, or are you seeking the One who holds all wisdom and knowledge? Are you prioritizing human opinions and worldly philosophies over God's Word and His guidance?

III. God’s Desire for a Pure and Holy Relationship

  1. God’s Holiness Requires Our Loyalty

    • God called Israel to be a holy nation, set apart for Him (Leviticus 11:45). He desired a people who would be devoted to Him alone, reflecting His holiness and purity in their lives. They were to be different from the surrounding nations, living according to God's standards and reflecting His character to the world.
    • As believers in Christ, we are called to the same holiness (1 Peter 1:16). We are to be set apart from the world, living lives that are pleasing to God and reflect His character. Our lives should be a testimony to His transforming power and His love.
  2. God’s Jealous Love

    • God’s warning in this passage is rooted in His love for His people. He is jealous for our affection and devotion, just as a loving spouse desires faithfulness and loyalty. He longs for us to experience the fullness of His love and blessings, and that can only happen when we are fully devoted to Him.
    • He wants us to trust Him completely, to rely on Him for guidance, and to seek His face in all things. He desires an intimate and exclusive relationship with us.

Illustration: A marriage cannot thrive if one partner is seeking intimacy and fulfillment elsewhere. It requires trust, loyalty, and a commitment to one another. Our relationship with God works the same way. He desires our undivided devotion and faithfulness. He wants us to turn to Him for everything, not just when it's convenient or when we have no other options.

IV. The Path Back to God Through Repentance

  1. Confess and Turn Away

    • If you have sought guidance from false sources, God's grace is available for you when you repent (1 John 1:9). He is ready to forgive and restore you when you turn away from your sin and turn back to Him. His love is unconditional, and His forgiveness is complete.
    • Acknowledge and renounce any involvement in ungodly spiritual practices. Confess your sin to God, and ask for His forgiveness and cleansing. Break any ties you have with those practices, and commit to seeking God's guidance alone.
  2. Seek God’s Guidance through His Word and Spirit

    • James 1:5 promises that God will give wisdom generously to those who ask. He is the source of all wisdom, and He is eager to guide us in His ways. He will not withhold His wisdom from those who sincerely seek it.
    • The Holy Spirit is our guide and counselor (John 16:13). He illuminates God's Word, speaks to our hearts, and leads us into truth. He helps us to understand God's will and to make wise decisions that honor Him.

Illustration: Imagine navigating a dark and treacherous path without a flashlight. You would stumble, fall, and lose your way. God’s Word is the light we need to guide us on our journey (Psalm 119:105). The Holy Spirit is the flashlight that illuminates the path, helping us to see clearly and avoid danger.

V. Victory in Christ

  • Through Jesus, we are set free from sin and empowered to live holy lives. His sacrifice on the cross broke the power of sin and death, and His resurrection gives us new life and victory over the enemy. We are no longer slaves to sin but children of God, set free to live according to His will.
  • Colossians 2:15 reminds us that Christ has disarmed the spiritual powers and triumphed over them. We no longer need to fear the enemy or seek guidance from false sources. We have the victory through Jesus Christ.
  • We have the ultimate source of wisdom and guidance in Jesus Christ. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). He is the ultimate guru, the perfect counselor, the one who knows us best and loves us most.

Invitation:

  • I encourage you to examine your heart today. Are there any areas where you have been seeking guidance from sources other than God? Are you placing your trust in things that cannot truly satisfy or provide lasting wisdom? Are you looking to horoscopes, psychics, or worldly philosophies for answers instead of turning to God?
  • If so, I invite you to repent and renew your commitment to seek God’s guidance alone. Turn away from false sources of wisdom, and turn towards the One who holds all truth and knowledge. He is waiting to guide you, protect you, and lead you into His perfect will for your life.

VI. Conclusion

  • God wants a deep and faithful relationship with His people. He desires our undivided devotion and trust. He longs for us to come to Him for everything, to seek His face in all things, and to rely on Him for wisdom and guidance.
  • Trust Him as your source of wisdom, guidance, and peace. He will never lead you astray, and He will always provide for your needs. He is the Good Shepherd, who leads His sheep beside still waters and guides them in paths of righteousness.
  • Let us commit to seeking His face, listening to His voice, and following His ways. May we be a people who are known for our unwavering faith and our reliance on the true source of wisdom and guidance. May we be a people who are fully devoted to God, reflecting His holiness and love to the world.

Prayer:

Lord, we thank You that You are the source of all wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Forgive us for the times when we have sought guidance from false sources. Help us to turn away from those things and to seek You with all our hearts. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, and guide us in Your truth. In Jesus' name, Amen.
