No Turning Back
Luke 9:62
Scripture: “But Jesus said to him, ‘No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.’” — Luke 9:62 (NKJV)
Introduction
Commitment is essential in every area of life—whether in relationships, work, or personal goals. But when it comes to following Jesus, commitment is even more critical. In Luke 9:62, Jesus gives a strong warning: discipleship is not for those who hesitate, look back, or long for their old life. Once we decide to follow Christ, we must move forward with unwavering faith.
1. The Call to Total Commitment
Jesus used the image of a plow to illustrate the seriousness of discipleship. In ancient farming, plowing required full focus. If a farmer looked back while plowing, the rows would be crooked, and the harvest would be ruined.
- Looking back represents divided loyalty—trying to follow Jesus while still clinging to the world.
- Many people struggle with letting go of past sins, comforts, or distractions.
- Jesus demands a wholehearted commitment, we cannot follow Him with one foot in the kingdom and one in the world.
Are there things in our past that are holding us back from fully following Jesus?
2. The Danger of Looking Back
Looking back is dangerous because it reveals hesitation, doubt, or regret about leaving the old life behind.
- Lot’s wife (Genesis 19:26) looked back at Sodom and turned into a pillar of salt. Her heart was still attached to her past.
- The Israelites longed for Egypt, even after God had delivered them. Their attachment to the past hindered their faith in God’s plan.
- Many today struggle with leaving behind old habits, relationships, or desires that compete with their devotion to Christ.
Jesus wants our eyes fixed forward, focused on His mission. When we look back, we risk being unfit for the kingdom.
3. Moving Forward with Jesus
True discipleship means pressing on, no matter the cost.
- Follow without hesitation - When Jesus calls, we must obey immediately.
- Trust God’s plan - The road ahead may be difficult, but Jesus walks with us.
- Stay focused on eternity - The rewards of God’s kingdom far outweigh anything left behind.
Paul echoes this mindset in Philippians 3:13-14: ”…forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
Application: Living with No Regrets
- Are you still holding onto parts of your past that hinder your walk with Christ?
- Do you hesitate when Jesus calls you to greater faith and obedience?
- Will you commit today to follow Jesus with no turning back?
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to follow You. Help us to leave behind anything that holds us back and to move forward with full commitment. Give us strength to fix our eyes on Jesus and to press on toward Your kingdom. May we never look back but always walk in faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
