Faith That Justifies

Romans 4:1-5, Romans 4:18-25

Scripture: Romans 4:1-5, Romans 4:18-25

Introduction

Many people believe that righteousness comes from good works, religious rituals, or obedience to the law. However, Romans 4 teaches that Abraham, the father of faith, was justified not by works but by faith in God. His story is a powerful example of how we, too, can receive righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ.

Today, we will explore three key lessons from Abraham’s justification by faith:

  1. Justification Is by Faith, Not Works
  2. Faith Trusts in God’s Promises
  3. Faith in Christ Brings Righteousness

1. Justification Is by Faith, Not Works

Romans 4:2-3 - “If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God. What does Scripture say? ’Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.’”

Paul makes it clear: Abraham was not justified by his good deeds, but by his faith. If righteousness came by works, Abraham could have taken credit for his salvation. But instead, he simply believed God, and his faith was counted as righteousness.

  • Application:
    • We are not saved by our good deeds but by faith in Christ.
    • Humility is key—we must rely on God’s grace, not our own efforts.

2. Faith Trusts in God’s Promises

Romans 4:18-21 - “Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, ‘So shall your offspring be.’”

Abraham faced an impossible situation—he and Sarah were too old to have children. But instead of doubting, he trusted that God would fulfill His promise. Even when circumstances seemed hopeless, Abraham’s faith did not waver.

  • Application:
    • True faith holds on to God’s promises, even when circumstances seem impossible.
    • When we struggle with doubt, we should remember that God is faithful.

3. Faith in Christ Brings Righteousness

Romans 4:23-25 - “The words ‘it was credited to him’ were written not for him alone, but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.”

Paul connects Abraham’s faith to our faith in Christ. Just as Abraham was justified by believing in God’s promise, we are justified by believing in Jesus’ death and resurrection. Our faith is counted as righteousness, just as it was for Abraham.

  • Application:
    • Faith in Jesus is the only way to be made right with God.
    • We must not only believe in Christ’s sacrifice but live in obedience to His Word.

Conclusion

Romans 4 teaches us that righteousness comes not by works, but by faith in God. Abraham was justified because he trusted in God’s promise, and in the same way, we are justified by believing in Christ. Let us follow Abraham’s example of unwavering faith, knowing that God is faithful to His promises.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us through Abraham that righteousness comes by faith. Help us to trust in Your promises and rely fully on Jesus for our salvation. Strengthen our faith so that we may walk in obedience and confidence in You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
