God’s Unfailing Love
Isaiah 49:15
Key Text:
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” — Isaiah 49:15 (NIV)
Introduction
One of the deepest human needs is to feel loved and remembered. There are moments in life when we may feel abandoned, forgotten, or insignificant. But in Isaiah 49:15, God makes a powerful declaration: even if a mother could forget her own child—a nearly impossible thought—God will never forget His people. This verse is a beautiful reminder of God’s unfailing love and faithfulness toward us.
1. The Depth of a Mother’s Love
God begins by using a powerful analogy: “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast?” A mother’s love is one of the strongest forms of human love.
- A mother carries a child for months, nourishes them, and protects them.
- A mother’s instinct is to care for and nurture her child, no matter the cost.
Yet, as strong as a mother’s love is, it is still human and can fail. Some mothers abandon their children, or circumstances may prevent them from showing love. But God’s love is perfect and eternal.
Application:
Even when people fail us—friends, family, or even parents—God’s love remains constant.
2. God’s Love is Greater Than a Mother’s Love
God makes a striking statement: “Though she may forget, I will not forget you!”
- Human love has limits, but God’s love is limitless.
- People may turn away from us, but God never does (Hebrews 13:5).
- Even when we feel distant from God, He is still near (Psalm 34:18).
Application:
No matter how abandoned, unloved, or forgotten you may feel, God remembers you. His love is unwavering.
3. God’s Love is Personal and Everlasting
Isaiah 49:16 (the next verse) says, “See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.”
- This means God holds us close and keeps us in His care.
- In Jesus Christ, this love was made visible—He bore our sins on the cross to prove that God would never abandon us (Romans 5:8).
Application:
If you ever doubt God’s love, remember the cross. Jesus’ sacrifice is the ultimate proof that God has not forgotten you.
Conclusion
Isaiah 49:15 is a powerful promise that no matter what happens in life, God’s love remains steadfast. If a mother can forget her child, God still will not forget us. His love is deeper, stronger, and eternal.
Closing Prayer
