Annointing of the Spirit
Luke 4:18
Key Text:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.” - Luke 4:18
Introduction
In Luke 4:18, Jesus reads from Isaiah 61 in the synagogue and declares that He is the fulfillment of this prophecy. This moment marks the beginning of His public ministry, revealing His mission to bring salvation, healing, and freedom. It also serves as a model for how we, as His followers, should live and minister to others.
1. The Anointing of the Spirit
Jesus begins by declaring, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me.” His ministry was empowered by the Holy Spirit, showing us that God’s work cannot be done in human strength alone. Just as Jesus needed the anointing, we too must rely on the Holy Spirit in our lives.
2. Preaching the Gospel to the Poor
Jesus came to bring good news to the poor—not just those who are financially poor but also those who are spiritually needy. The gospel offers hope, redemption, and new life to all who recognize their need for God.
3. Healing for the Brokenhearted
Life is filled with pain, disappointments, and heartaches. Jesus came to heal the brokenhearted, offering comfort, peace, and restoration. No matter how deep the wounds, His love is greater.
4. Deliverance for the Captives
Many people live in bondage—whether to sin, fear, addiction, or oppression. Jesus proclaims deliverance to the captives, breaking every chain and setting people free. True freedom comes only through Him.
5. Sight for the Blind
Jesus healed physical blindness, but He also came to open spiritual eyes. Many are blinded by sin, pride, or deception, unable to see the truth. Through Christ, we receive spiritual sight to understand God’s love and purpose for our lives.
6. Liberty for the Oppressed
The world is full of oppression—whether emotional, social, or spiritual. Jesus declares that He has come to set at liberty them that are bruised. He lifts the burdens of guilt, shame, and injustice, bringing true peace and freedom.
Conclusion
Luke 4:18 is not just a statement about Jesus’ mission—it is a call for us to follow in His footsteps. As His disciples, we are called to share the good news, bring healing to the hurting, and proclaim freedom to the oppressed. May we walk in the power of the Holy Spirit and carry out the mission of Christ in our daily lives.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus to bring hope, healing, and freedom. Fill us with Your Spirit so we may continue His mission, sharing the gospel and ministering to those in need. Help us to walk in Your anointing and be a light in this world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
