Sensual Sins : Works Of The Flesh
Galatians 5:19
Text: Galatians 5:19 - “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery…”
Introduction
We live in a world obsessed with pleasure—but the Word of God teaches us that not all pleasure is pure, and not all desires should be followed.
Sex is not sinful—it’s sacred.
But when taken outside God’s design, it becomes destructive.
Paul begins his list of “acts of the flesh” with sensual sins because they strike at the core of our identity and intimacy.
Let’s look at three specific sins:
- Sexual immorality
- Impurity
- Debauchery
Point 1: Sexual Immorality — Misusing What God Made Beautiful
Greek word: Porneia - the root of “pornography,” refers to any sexual activity outside the covenant of marriage between a man and woman.
Examples:
- Premarital sex
- Adultery
- Pornography
- Same-sex sexual activity (according to biblical teaching)
Why it’s dangerous:
- It separates what God intended to stay together—sex from covenant.
- It leads to shame, broken trust, emotional damage, and spiritual bondage.
Scripture:
“Flee from sexual immorality… You are not your own, you were bought with a price.” — 1 Corinthians 6:18-20
Truth:
God isn’t anti-sex. He created it.
But He is anti-destruction, and sexual sin always destroys more than we expect.
Point 2: Impurity — Polluting the Heart and Mind
Greek word: Akatharsia — unclean, corrupt, morally filthy.
This is more than just what we do—it’s what we feed our minds.
Examples:
- Consuming explicit media
- Entertaining lustful thoughts
- Justifying small compromises
Jesus said:
“Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” — Matthew 5:28
Insight:
The battlefield is the mind.
Impurity is like mold—it grows in darkness. The longer it’s hidden, the worse it gets.
Point 3: Debauchery — Shameless, Unrestrained Behavior
Greek word: Aselgeia — sensuality without shame, unbridled indulgence.
This is when sin becomes celebrated, not just tolerated.
Examples:
- Open sexual rebellion
- Party lifestyle with no moral limits
- Living “for the weekend,” for the thrill, for the next hit of pleasure
Warning:
“They brag about shameful things… Their god is their appetite.” — Philippians 3:19
Debauchery says: “If it feels good, do it.”
But God says: “Be holy, for I am holy.”
The Danger of These Sins
Paul doesn’t just list these to make us feel bad—he gives a warning:
“Those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” — Galatians 5:21
If these sins are our lifestyle—our identity—we’re not walking in the Spirit.
But here’s the good news:
The Good News: Grace is Greater than Your Past
1 Corinthians 6:11
“And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, sanctified, justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”
- Jesus forgives sexual sin.
- He cleanses impurity.
- He breaks the chains of addiction.
- He gives power to walk in purity.
How to Walk in Purity
- Repent and confess — God forgives what we uncover.
- Renew your mind — Fill your thoughts with Scripture and truth.
- Flee temptation — Don’t manage it, escape it.
- Live Spirit-filled — The Spirit gives strength the flesh never can.
- Find accountability — You weren’t meant to fight alone.
Conclusion
Sexual sin is serious—but grace is greater, and purity is possible.
God doesn’t just want to save your soul—He wants to restore your desires, your mind, your heart, and your relationships.
Don’t follow your feelings. Follow your Father.
Let the Holy Spirit rule your body—not the flesh.
Closing Prayer
Lord, we confess that our hearts have been led by desires that do not honor You.
Cleanse us from impurity, forgive our sins, and break every chain of sexual bondage.
Help us to walk in purity—not by our strength, but by Your Spirit.
Fill us with holy desires. Make us vessels of honor.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
