Understanding of Authority

Luke 7:9

Scripture: “When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, ‘I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!’” — Luke 7:9 (NKJV)

Introduction

Faith is one of the most crucial elements of our walk with God. It is the foundation of our salvation, our relationship with Christ, and the way we receive His promises. In Luke 7, we encounter a remarkable event where Jesus “marveled” at someone’s faith. It wasn’t the faith of a religious leader or a disciple—it was the faith of a Roman centurion, a Gentile. What made his faith so extraordinary that it stood out even among God’s chosen people?

1. The Centurion’s Humility and Understanding of Authority

The centurion sent Jewish elders to Jesus, asking Him to heal his servant. However, he later sent friends with a message: “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof. Therefore, I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.” (Luke 7:6-7).

This centurion understood something that even many Israelites did not—Jesus’ authority was absolute. Just as he commanded soldiers and they obeyed, he knew that Jesus had the authority to command sickness to leave. He believed Jesus didn’t need to be physically present, His word was enough.

2. The Power of Faith in Christ’s Word

Jesus commended the centurion’s faith because it rested completely on His word. The centurion did not need signs, wonders, or physical proof. He simply believed that if Jesus spoke, it would happen. This is the kind of faith that pleases God—faith that takes Him at His word.

We often struggle with doubt, waiting for visible evidence before we trust God. However, the centurion challenges us to believe in Jesus’ word, even when circumstances seem impossible.

3. Jesus’ Response: A Faith That Amazed Him

The Gospels record only two times when Jesus “marveled”—once at great faith (Luke 7:9) and once at unbelief (Mark 6:6). The contrast is striking. Among His own people, Jesus found doubt and resistance, yet among an outsider, He found remarkable faith.

This teaches us that faith is not about background, nationality, or religious status—it is about trust in Christ. No matter who you are or where you come from, God responds to faith.

Application: Growing a Faith That Pleases God

  • Trust in God’s Word: Take God at His word and believe His promises.
  • Recognize Jesus’ Authority: He has power over every situation in your life.
  • Be Humble Before God: The centurion did not see himself as worthy, but he saw Jesus as all-powerful.
  • Pray with Confidence: Like the centurion, come to Jesus knowing that He is able and willing to move in your situation.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the lesson of faith in the centurion’s story. Help us to trust in Your word completely, knowing that You are in control. Strengthen our faith so that we may walk in confidence, believing in Your power and authority. May we always rely on You and bring our needs before You with humility and trust. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
