God Meant It for Good
Genesis 50:20
Text: Genesis 50:20 (NIV) — “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”
Introduction:
Life is filled with challenges, betrayal, and pain. We experience disappointments, setbacks, and moments when it feels like the world is against us. However, Joseph’s story reminds us that even when people intend evil, God can use those situations for our good and His greater purpose. Genesis 50:20 is one of the most powerful declarations of God’s sovereignty in Scripture, a testament to His ability to bring beauty from ashes.
1. The Reality of Human Evil
- Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery out of jealousy and resentment. He was falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife and forgotten in prison. He experienced injustice, betrayal, and years of suffering.
- Point: Life is not without betrayal, injustice, and harm. We live in a fallen world where people often act out of selfishness, pride, and malice. We will experience hurt, disappointment, and pain caused by the actions of others.
- Example: Jesus Himself was betrayed by Judas, mocked by the crowds, and crucified unjustly. Even the Son of God was not immune to the evil and brokenness of this world.
People may plot against you, betray you, and seek to harm you, but they cannot thwart God’s plans. Their evil intentions cannot ultimately derail God's purposes for your life.
Application: Are you facing betrayal, injustice, or hardship today? Are you hurting because of the actions of others? Trust God even when others' actions hurt you. God sees all, and He will bring justice in His time. He will use even the most difficult situations for your good and His glory.
2. God’s Sovereignty Over Every Situation
- Joseph declared that what his brothers intended for harm, God used for good. He recognized that God was in control, even when it seemed like everything was falling apart.
- Point: God is not the author of evil, but He can use it for His purposes. He is sovereign over every situation, and He can bring good out of even the most difficult circumstances. He took Joseph’s pain and used it to save an entire nation from famine.
- Illustration: Romans 8:28 — “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” This is a powerful promise that God is working in every situation, even the painful ones, to bring about His good purposes for those who love Him.
What looks like a setback is often a setup for God’s glory. He can use our trials, our disappointments, and even our enemies to accomplish His purposes and bring about His ultimate plan.
Application: When life doesn’t make sense, when you are facing challenges and setbacks, remind yourself that God is still in control and is working behind the scenes. He has a plan, and He will use even the most difficult situations for your good and His glory.
3. God’s Purpose is Greater Than Our Pain
- Joseph’s suffering was not wasted—it prepared him for leadership and positioned him to save many lives during the famine. His years of hardship equipped him with the wisdom, compassion, and resilience he needed to fulfill his God-given destiny.
- Point: God often uses trials to refine us, strengthen our faith, and prepare us for His calling. He uses the difficult seasons of life to shape our character, deepen our dependence on Him, and equip us for greater service.
- Example: Job, who lost everything—his family, his wealth, and his health—was restored and blessed even more in the end. His suffering deepened his faith and ultimately led to a greater understanding of God's character and purposes.
God turns our pain into purpose when we trust Him. He can take our brokenness, our disappointments, and our suffering and use them to bring about something beautiful and meaningful.
Application: Reflect on how God may be using your current challenges to shape you for something greater. Are you going through a difficult season? Are you facing trials or setbacks? Trust that God is using this time to refine your faith, strengthen your character, and prepare you for His perfect plan for your life.
Conclusion:
Joseph’s declaration in Genesis 50:20 is a testimony of God’s redemptive power. What others intend for harm, God can transform into something beautiful and purposeful. He can take our pain, our disappointments, and our betrayals and use them to bring about His good purposes.
- Challenge: Will you trust God with your pain and believe that He can use it for good? Will you surrender your hurts, your disappointments, and your fears to Him, knowing that He can bring beauty from ashes?
- Encouragement: No trial is wasted in God’s hands. He can use every experience, every challenge, and every setback to shape you, strengthen you, and prepare you for His perfect plan for your life.
Closing Verse: Isaiah 61:3 — ”…to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.”
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for being sovereign over every situation in our lives. Help us to trust that You can turn even the worst moments into something good for Your glory. We surrender our pain, our disappointments, and our fears to You today, believing that You can use them to shape us, strengthen us, and bring about Your perfect purposes for our lives. Amen.
