Is Anything Too Hard for the Lord?

Genesis 18:14

Text: “Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” (Genesis 18:14, NIV)

Introduction:

Life often presents us with situations that seem impossible. Whether it’s a health challenge, financial crisis, broken relationship, or a long-awaited promise, we sometimes wonder if God can truly intervene. Genesis 18:14 presents a powerful question: “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” This rhetorical question from God Himself challenges us to trust in His power, timing, and faithfulness.

I. God’s Power Is Limitless (Genesis 18:14a)

  • The question “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” underscores God’s omnipotence.
  • Sarah, at 90 years old, had long given up hope of having a child. Her laughter in disbelief highlights how impossible the situation seemed (Genesis 18:12).
  • Yet, God specializes in doing the impossible (Jeremiah 32:17: “Nothing is too hard for You.”)
  • Throughout Scripture, we see examples of God’s limitless power:
    • Parting the Red Sea (Exodus 14:21)
    • Feeding the five thousand (Matthew 14:13-21)
    • Raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11:43-44)

Application:

  • What situation in your life seems impossible right now? Bring it to the God for whom nothing is too hard. Do we truly believe that God can do anything, or do we limit Him with our doubts and fears?

II. God’s Timing Is Perfect (Genesis 18:14b)

  • God promised to return “at the appointed time” when Sarah would have a son.
  • Though Abraham and Sarah had waited 25 years since the initial promise (Genesis 12), God’s timing was precise.
  • Ecclesiastes 3:11: “He has made everything beautiful in its time.”
  • Delays in God’s promises are not denials, they are often opportunities for growth and preparation.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s timing, even when it doesn’t align with your expectations. Are we patient with God's timing, or do we try to force things to happen according to our own schedule?
  • While waiting, remain faithful and obedient, knowing that God is working behind the scenes. How can we use our waiting time to grow closer to God and prepare for His promises?

III. God’s Faithfulness Never Fails

  • Despite Sarah’s laughter and doubt, God fulfilled His promise (Genesis 21:1-2).
  • God is faithful to His word even when we struggle with disbelief (2 Timothy 2:13: “If we are faithless, He remains faithful.”)
  • Abraham and Sarah’s story is a testament that God’s promises are always “Yes” and “Amen” (2 Corinthians 1:20).

Application:

  • Don’t let past disappointments cloud your faith in God’s promises. How can we overcome past hurts and disappointments to trust God fully?
  • Choose to trust His faithfulness, even when circumstances suggest otherwise. What are some practical ways we can strengthen our faith and trust in God's promises?

Conclusion:

Genesis 18:14 confronts us with a simple yet profound question: Is anything too hard for the Lord? The answer is a resounding No! God is powerful, His timing is perfect, and His faithfulness is unshakable.

Challenge:

This week, whenever you face doubt or fear, remember Genesis 18:14. Declare in faith: Nothing is too hard for my God! Trust Him to do the impossible in your life.
