Blessed in Christ
Ephesians 1:3
Scripture:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.” - Ephesians 1:3 (ESV)
Introduction
Many people chase after blessings—wealth, success, health, and happiness. While these are good things, the Bible speaks of a greater blessing that surpasses all earthly treasures: spiritual blessings in Christ.
Paul begins his letter to the Ephesians with praise, declaring that God has already blessed believers with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. Today, let’s explore the source, scope, and significance of these blessings in Christ.
1. The Source of Our Blessings - God the Father
Paul starts with “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” This reminds us that:
- God is the giver of all blessings - James 1:17 says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.”
- Blessings flow through Jesus Christ - Our relationship with Christ opens the door to these blessings (John 1:16).
- We praise God because He first blessed us - Paul begins with worship because he understands that our blessings come from God’s grace, not our works.
2. The Scope of Our Blessings - Every Spiritual Blessing
Paul emphasizes that we have received every spiritual blessing. What does this mean?
- Spiritual, not just material: While God does provide for our physical needs, the greater blessings are spiritual—salvation, forgiveness, the Holy Spirit, and eternal life.
- Already given: These blessings are not just for the future but are already ours in Christ.
- Complete and sufficient: We lack nothing in Christ. Everything we need to live a godly life has already been provided (2 Peter 1:3).
3. The Location of Our Blessings - In Heavenly Places
Paul says our blessings are “in the heavenly places.” This reminds us that:
- Our true home is in heaven - Philippians 3:20 says, “Our citizenship is in heaven.”
- Our blessings are eternal - Unlike earthly treasures that fade, spiritual blessings are secure forever (Matthew 6:19-20).
- We live with a heavenly mindset - Colossians 3:2 urges us to “Set your minds on things above, not on things that are on earth.”
4. The Key to Our Blessings - In Christ
The phrase “in Christ” is central to Ephesians 1. All our blessings come through our relationship with Jesus.
- Without Christ, we are spiritually bankrupt (John 15:5).
- In Christ, we are chosen, redeemed, and adopted as God’s children (Ephesians 1:4-5).
- Christ is our greatest blessing! Every blessing—grace, peace, joy, and eternal life—flows from knowing Him.
Conclusion
Ephesians 1:3 reminds us that as believers, we are already blessed beyond measure. While the world chases temporary things, we have eternal blessings in Christ that can never be taken away.
Are you living in the fullness of these blessings? If you are in Christ, rejoice and walk in His promises. If you have not yet placed your faith in Him, today is the day to receive the greatest blessing—salvation in Jesus Christ.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for blessing us in Christ with every spiritual blessing. Help us to live with a heart of gratitude, knowing that our greatest treasure is found in You. Teach us to set our minds on the things of heaven and to walk in the blessings You have given us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
