A Heart Filled with Worship

Ephesians 5:19

Scripture:

“Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.” - Ephesians 5:19 (NIV)

Introduction

Worship is not just about singing in church, it is a lifestyle of expressing gratitude and praise to God. In Ephesians 5:19, Paul describes how believers should encourage one another through songs of worship and cultivate a heart that glorifies God.

Today, we will explore three key aspects of this verse:

  1. Worship Through Encouraging Words
  2. Worship Through Spiritual Songs
  3. Worship From the Heart to the Lord

1. Worship Through Encouraging Words

Paul begins by saying, “Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit.” This teaches us that worship is not just directed to God—it also builds up others.

  • Psalms - Scriptures set to music, often expressing trust, joy, or lament.
  • Hymns - Songs that teach deep truths about God and His works.
  • Songs from the Spirit - Spontaneous songs inspired by the Holy Spirit.

How Does Worship Encourage Others?

  • Strengthens our faith - Singing God’s truth reminds us of His promises (Colossians 3:16).
  • Unites believers - Worship brings unity as we glorify God together.
  • Lifts burdens - A song of praise can encourage someone in difficult times.

Application: Make it a habit to speak words of encouragement and share songs of faith with those around you.

2. Worship Through Spiritual Songs

Paul encourages us to “sing and make music”. This means that worship should be an active expression of joy.

Why is Singing Important in Worship?

  • It expresses our love for God. Worship is a response to His goodness (Psalm 100:2).
  • It invites God’s presence. The Bible says God inhabits the praises of His people (Psalm 22:3).
  • It transforms our hearts. Singing praises can shift our focus from problems to God.

Application: Don’t hold back in worship—sing to the Lord with joy! Whether in church, at home, or in your heart, let your praise flow freely.

3. Worship From the Heart to the Lord

Paul ends by saying, “Make music from your heart to the Lord.” True worship is not just about the words we sing—it comes from a heart devoted to God.

True Worship Comes From the Heart

  • It is sincere - Worship should not be done out of routine but from a genuine love for God (John 4:24).
  • It is personal - Even in a group, worship is an intimate connection between you and God.
  • It is continuous - Worship is not just for Sunday—it should be part of our daily lives.

Application: Examine your heart—is your worship coming from a place of love and gratitude? Seek to worship God not just with words, but with a heart that truly honors Him.

Conclusion

Ephesians 5:19 teaches us that worship is:

  • A way to encourage and uplift others.
  • A joyful expression through song.
  • A heartfelt offering to the Lord.

Let us live as people who worship God in every area of our lives, making music in our hearts and speaking words of encouragement to one another.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of worship. Help us to encourage one another with songs of praise and to sing with hearts full of gratitude. May our worship be sincere and bring glory to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
