Jehovah Jireh – The Lord Will Provide

Genesis 22:13-14

Main Scripture:
Genesis 22:13-14 (NIV)
“Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place ‘The Lord Will Provide.’ And to this day it is said, ‘On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.’”

Introduction: A Name Worth Remembering

We often say, “God will provide,” but Jehovah Jireh is not just a phrase — it’s a name of God.
A name rooted in divine experience and deep faith.
When Abraham named God Jehovah Jireh, he wasn’t speaking theory — he had just walked through a test of unshakable trust.

Let’s dig into this powerful name and discover what it means for our faith today.

1. God Sees Before We See

The Hebrew root of Jireh is “to see.” But not just to see passively — it means to see to it.
In other words, God doesn’t just observe our needs — He anticipates them and arranges provision ahead of time.

📖 Genesis 22:8 — “God himself will provide the lamb…”

Abraham didn’t know how God would provide. He just knew God sees ahead.
That’s faith.

💡 Application:
When you’re in a season of uncertainty — a financial burden, a career decision, a family need — remember:
God saw it coming and has already prepared the provision.
You may not see it yet, but Jehovah Jireh is already at work.

2. Provision Often Comes Through Obedience

God didn’t drop the ram into Abraham’s lap when he first began the journey.
The ram appeared after Abraham climbed the mountain, bound his son, and raised the knife.

We often want God’s provision before our obedience.
But sometimes God waits for our faith to step out before His hand moves in.

📖 James 2:22 — “You see that Abraham’s faith and his actions were working together…”

💡 Application:
Are you waiting for God to provide without walking in obedience?
Sometimes the “ram in the thicket” shows up after you’ve climbed the mountain of trust.

3. God Provides What We Need, Not Always What We Want

Abraham may have wanted a different plan — maybe an angel to say, “Don’t worry, it was a test! Go home.”
But instead, God provided a substitute — a ram in place of Isaac.

The beauty is: God always provides exactly what is necessary, and often in a way that points to something greater.

📖 John 1:29 — “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

The ram in Genesis was a foreshadowing of Jesus — the ultimate provision.

💡 Application:
God’s provision may not look like your preference — but it will always be for your good, your growth, and His glory.

4. On the Mountain, It Will Be Provided

Genesis 22:14 says, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”

Provision often happens on the mountaintop of surrender.
When we lay down what’s most precious to us — our control, our comfort, our plans — God meets us there.

💡 Application:
If you’re waiting for Jehovah Jireh, ask yourself:
• Have I climbed the mountain of trust?
• Have I surrendered the outcome?
• Am I listening for His voice?

Closing Encouragement

Jehovah Jireh is not just Abraham’s testimony — He is our Provider too.
Maybe you’re at the base of the mountain — full of questions.
Maybe you’re halfway up — weary and wondering.
Or maybe you’re at the top — knife raised, holding on only to faith.

Wherever you are, Jehovah Jireh sees you, knows your need, and is faithful to provide.

Closing Prayer

Lord God, Jehovah Jireh, we praise You for being the God who sees ahead and provides.
Thank You for always knowing what we need and meeting us with grace at just the right time.
Help us to walk in faith, even when we don’t understand the plan.
Teach us to surrender completely, so that we may receive fully.
Strengthen our trust, and remind us that You are faithful on every mountain.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
