Reaping What You Sow

Galatians 6:7-9

Scripture:

“Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” - Galatians 6:7-9 (ESV)

Introduction

Every action we take is like planting a seed. The choices we make today will bear fruit in the future—either for good or for harm. Paul reminds us of a spiritual law of sowing and reaping: we will harvest what we plant.

Many people try to ignore or manipulate this truth, but Paul warns, “God is not mocked.” We cannot deceive God—our lives will reflect what we invest in. Today, let’s explore three key principles from this passage.

1. The Principle of Sowing and Reaping (Verse 7)

Paul starts with a warning: “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked.” This means we cannot trick God or escape the consequences of our actions.

  • What We Sow, We Reap: Just as a farmer cannot plant weeds and expect wheat, we cannot sow sin and expect a blessed life.
  • Sowing Takes Time: A farmer doesn’t see an immediate harvest. Likewise, our choices today shape our future—even if we don’t see the effects right away.
  • God Sees Everything: Hebrews 4:13 says, “No creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”

We must be mindful of what we are planting with our words, actions, and thoughts.

2. Two Types of Sowing (Verse 8)

Paul contrasts two fields in which we can plant: the flesh and the Spirit.

  • Sowing to the Flesh:
    • Living selfishly, indulging in sin, and prioritizing worldly desires.
    • Leads to corruption, brokenness, and spiritual death (Romans 8:6).
    • Example: A life of dishonesty, greed, or immorality eventually leads to destruction.
  • Sowing to the Spirit:
    • Investing in God’s kingdom through prayer, obedience, and righteous living.
    • Leads to eternal life, peace, and joy.
    • Example: A person who seeks God, serves others, and walks in righteousness will experience the blessings of spiritual growth.

Every day, we are making deposits into one of these two fields. Where are you investing?

3. Encouragement to Keep Sowing (Verse 9)

Paul knows that doing good can sometimes feel exhausting, so he encourages us:

  • Do Not Grow Weary: Serving God, resisting sin, and living righteously can be challenging. But God sees our faithfulness (1 Corinthians 15:58).
  • A Harvest is Coming: “In due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” God’s timing is perfect, and our obedience will produce fruit.
  • Keep Doing Good: Even when we don’t see immediate results, God promises a reward for those who remain faithful (Hebrews 6:10).

Conclusion

The law of sowing and reaping is a truth we cannot ignore. What we invest in today will determine what we experience tomorrow. If we sow to the flesh, we will reap destruction, if we sow to the Spirit, we will reap eternal blessings.

Are you planting seeds that will lead to a life that honors God? If you’ve been sowing to the flesh, it’s never too late to start sowing to the Spirit. Stay faithful, and trust that God will bring a harvest in due time.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us of the importance of sowing and reaping. Help us to invest in the things of the Spirit and to turn away from the desires of the flesh. Give us strength to remain faithful, even when the harvest seems far away. We trust in Your timing and Your promises. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
