Immanuel: God With Us - The Promise Fulfilled

Matthew 1:21-23

Key Text:

“And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” - Matthew 1:21-23

Introduction:

The birth of Jesus is the greatest moment in human history. In this passage, the angel announces to Joseph the divine purpose of Jesus’ birth:

  • He saves us from sin.
  • He fulfills God’s promises.
  • He is God with us.

Today, let’s reflect on three key truths from this passage:

  1. Jesus Came to Save Us from Sin
  2. Jesus Fulfilled God’s Promises
  3. Jesus is God With Us

1. Jesus Came to Save Us from Sin

  • “You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
  • The name Jesus (Yeshua) means “The Lord Saves.”
  • Sin separates us from God, but Jesus came to reconcile us.

Application: Have we truly understood the weight of our sin and the depth of Jesus' sacrifice to save us from it?

  • Romans 6:23 - “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
  • Jesus didn’t come to condemn the world but to save it (John 3:17).

2. Jesus Fulfilled God’s Promises

  • “That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet.”
  • This prophecy was given in Isaiah 7:14, showing that Jesus was God’s plan from the beginning.
  • Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s plan of redemption.

Application: Do we recognize Jesus as the fulfillment of God's promises, and do we trust in His faithfulness to continue fulfilling His Word in our lives?

  • 2 Corinthians 1:20 - “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen.”

3. Jesus is God With Us

  • “They shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, ‘God with us.’”
  • Jesus is not just a great teacher or prophet—He is God in the flesh (John 1:14).
  • This means:
    • We are never alone.
    • God understands our struggles.
    • He is with us in every season of life.

Application: Do we live with the awareness that God is always with us, even in our darkest moments? How does this truth impact our daily lives and decisions?

  • Hebrews 13:5 - “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Conclusion:

Matthew 1:21-23 reminds us that Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s love and salvation. He came to save us, fulfill prophecy, and dwell among us. Because of Jesus, we have hope, forgiveness, and the presence of God with us always.

Reflection Questions:

  • Have you received Jesus as your Savior?
  • Do you live with the confidence that God is always with you?

Closing Prayer:

Lord, thank You for sending Jesus to save us from our sins. Thank You for fulfilling Your promises and for being with us always. Help us to trust You and walk in the joy of Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
