Living by Every Word of God
Matthew 4:4
Text: “But He answered and said, ‘It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” - Matthew 4:4
Introduction:
In Matthew 4:4, Jesus responds to the devil’s temptation in the wilderness by quoting Scripture. This verse is part of a larger confrontation where Jesus, after fasting for forty days and nights, is tempted by the devil to turn stones into bread. Jesus’ response to this temptation is profound: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” This passage teaches us a crucial lesson about where true sustenance and life come from.
Today, we will explore three important truths that Jesus’ response reveals about our relationship with God’s Word and how it sustains us in every area of life:
- The Necessity of God’s Word
- The Source of True Sustenance
- Living by God’s Word in Everyday Life
1. The Necessity of God’s Word
- In this moment, Jesus is not just rejecting the devil’s offer to turn stones into bread, He is making a profound statement about the importance of God’s Word in our lives. Jesus makes it clear that while physical nourishment (bread) is necessary for life, there is something even more essential for true life: spiritual nourishment through God’s Word.
- Psalm 119:105 - “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
- Just as our bodies need food to survive, our souls need the Word of God to thrive. In a world that often values physical well-being above spiritual health, Jesus teaches us that the Word of God is foundational to living a full and abundant life.
Application: We cannot live fulfilling, purpose-driven lives without the Word of God. The Word brings us wisdom, direction, comfort, and strength in ways that bread cannot. To live well, we must prioritize feeding on God’s Word, just as we prioritize feeding our bodies.
2. The Source of True Sustenance
- Jesus makes a distinction between bread alone and every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Bread represents physical provision, but Jesus points to a higher source of sustenance—God’s divine Word.
- John 6:35 - “And Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.’”
- In this passage, Jesus reveals that He Himself is the ultimate sustenance. He is the living Word and the true bread of life. While we may seek physical satisfaction in the world, only Jesus can satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts.
Application: Jesus is not just speaking about physical bread, He is pointing to Himself as the one who truly sustains us. To have life in abundance, we must rely on Him and His Word. Just as we crave physical food, we should crave the nourishing truth of God’s Word.
3. Living by God’s Word in Everyday Life
- Jesus’ response to the devil teaches us that God’s Word is not just something to be read or studied, but something to be lived by. When we face trials, temptations, and struggles in life, we must live by the Word of God, trusting that it has the power to sustain us and guide us.
- Deuteronomy 8:3 - “So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.”
- God’s Word is meant to shape every part of our lives—our actions, decisions, attitudes, and relationships. It is not enough to know God’s Word intellectually, we must apply it in practical ways.
Application: When facing temptation or challenges, like Jesus did in the wilderness, we can draw strength and wisdom from God’s Word. Whether it’s comforting us in times of sorrow, guiding us in times of confusion, or empowering us in moments of temptation, the Word of God is our constant source of strength and sustenance.
Conclusion:
Jesus’ words in Matthew 4:4 remind us that God’s Word is essential to our lives. In a world that often prioritizes the physical over the spiritual, Jesus calls us to recognize that the true source of life is found in God’s Word. As we face the challenges and temptations of life, we must follow Jesus’ example and live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
Reflection Questions:
- How often do you turn to God’s Word for nourishment and direction?
- In what areas of your life do you need to trust more fully in the power of God’s Word?
- How can you apply God’s Word more consistently in your daily life?
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Word that sustains us, guides us, and nourishes our souls. Help us to hunger for Your Word as much as we hunger for food. Give us the strength to live by Your Word in every area of our lives. May we always find our ultimate sustenance in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
