Go and Do Likewise

Luke 10:37

Scripture: “And he said, ‘He who showed mercy on him.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do likewise.’” — Luke 10:37 (NKJV)

Introduction

In Luke 10, Jesus tells the parable of the Good Samaritan in response to a lawyer who asked, “Who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10:29). This powerful story teaches us about love, compassion, and mercy beyond social, racial, and religious barriers. At the end of the parable, Jesus commands the lawyer—and us—“Go and do likewise.”

This means that as believers, we are called not just to hear the Word but to live it out in acts of love and mercy. Today, we will explore three key lessons from this passage: the heart of compassion, the action of love, and the command to follow Christ’s example.

1. The Heart of Compassion

  • The Samaritan in the parable saw the wounded man and had compassion (Luke 10:33).

  • Unlike the priest and the Levite, who passed by without helping, the Samaritan allowed his heart to be moved by the suffering of another.

  • True compassion comes from God. Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning.”

  • If we are followers of Christ, our hearts must reflect His compassion for the lost, the broken, and the hurting.

  • Application: Do you have a heart that is sensitive to the needs of others, or do you pass by those in need?

2. The Action of Love

  • The Samaritan did not just feel sorry for the injured man—he took action.

  • He bandaged his wounds, poured oil and wine, placed him on his own animal, took him to an inn, and paid for his care (Luke 10:34-35).

  • Love is more than words, it requires action. 1 John 3:18 says, “Let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.”

  • The Samaritan sacrificed his time, resources, and comfort to help someone in need.

  • Application: Are you willing to go beyond words and take real action to help those around you?

3. The Command to Follow Christ’s Example

  • Jesus ends the parable with a clear command: “Go and do likewise.”

  • This means we are to show mercy just as the Samaritan did.

  • Jesus Himself is the ultimate Good Samaritan—He found us in our brokenness, healed our wounds, and paid the price for our restoration.

  • As His followers, we must love without limits, serve without expecting anything in return, and help those who cannot repay us (Luke 6:35).

  • Application: Are you living out Jesus’ command to “go and do likewise” in your daily life?

Conclusion: A Call to Love and Mercy

The story of the Good Samaritan is not just a lesson, it is a call to action. Jesus commands us to:

  1. Have a heart of compassion for those in need.
  2. Take action to love and serve others.
  3. Live as Christ’s representatives, showing mercy to all.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us mercy when we were lost and broken. Help us to have hearts of compassion and to take action in loving those around us. Teach us to go and do likewise, just as Jesus commanded. May we be true reflections of Your love in this world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
