Fear Not, I Am With You

Acts 18:9-10

Scripture: Acts 18:9-10 (NIV) “One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: ‘Do not be afraid, keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city.’”

Introduction In Acts 18, Paul finds himself in Corinth, a city known for its cultural influence and immorality. Despite his dedication to preaching the gospel, Paul faces opposition and discouragement. In response, God speaks to him in a vision, offering reassurance: “Do not be afraid. Keep speaking. I am with you.” This message is not just for Paul but resonates with us today when we encounter fear and uncertainty in our faith journey.

1. The Reality of Fear and Opposition

  • Paul’s Struggles: Paul faced rejection from both Jews and Gentiles. Preaching Christ crucified often led to hostility.
  • Fear is Real: Fear is a natural response to adversity. Paul’s temptation to remain silent reflects common human emotions.
  • Reflection: Are there situations where fear hinders your faith? What challenges make you hesitant to speak up?

2. God’s Assurance: “Do Not Be Afraid”

  • God’s Compassion: God acknowledges Paul’s fear and responds with reassurance, not rebuke.
  • God’s Presence: “I am with you” is a powerful promise that emboldens us to face challenges.
  • Facing Fear with Faith: Trusting in God’s control and plan helps diminish fear.
  • Reflection: How does God’s presence impact your fears? How can you remind yourself of His support in difficult times?

3. The Call to Keep Speaking: “Do Not Be Silent”

  • The Importance of Speaking: Despite fear, Paul is instructed to keep proclaiming the gospel.
  • Boldness in Opposition: Fear often silences us, but God calls us to speak with courage.
  • The Power of Words: The gospel transforms lives, and our words are crucial for advancing God’s Kingdom.
  • Reflection: Where has fear kept you from sharing your faith? How can you speak more boldly for God?

4. God’s Promise: “I Have Many People in This City”

  • God’s Sovereignty: God assures Paul that He has prepared hearts in Corinth to receive the gospel.
  • God’s Unseen Work: Trusting that God is working behind the scenes encourages perseverance.
  • Encouragement for the Discouraged: Knowing we are not alone strengthens our resolve.
  • Reflection: Do you trust that God is working in ways you cannot see? How can this knowledge encourage your faithfulness?

5. The Call to Faithful Obedience

  • Faithful Proclamation: Despite fear and opposition, we are called to proclaim God’s truth.
  • Trust in God’s Faithfulness: God’s promises to Paul apply to us. He is with us and will sustain us.
  • Reflection: How can you stay faithful in sharing the gospel? What steps will help you trust in God’s faithfulness?

Conclusion Acts 18:9-10 reveals God’s encouragement to Paul during a time of fear and opposition. The message is clear: “Do not be afraid. Keep speaking. I am with you.” This call to boldness and trust in God’s presence is for us today as we navigate our faith journey.

Closing Prayer Father, thank You for the assurance of Your presence. Help us trust in You and boldly proclaim Your truth, even when fear arises. Thank You for preparing hearts to receive the gospel. May we remain faithful to Your calling. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
