Justified by Faith in Christ

Galatians 2:16

Scripture:

“Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.” - Galatians 2:16 (ESV)

Introduction

One of the greatest questions in life is this: How can a person be made right with God? Many people believe that their good deeds, religious practices, or moral living will earn them a place in heaven. But the Apostle Paul makes it clear in Galatians 2:16 that justification—being declared righteous before God—comes only through faith in Jesus Christ, not by works of the law.

1. The Problem with the Law

Paul was addressing an issue in the early church where some Jewish Christians believed that Gentile believers had to follow the Law of Moses to be saved. However, Paul strongly refutes this idea. He reminds the Galatians that no one can be justified by obeying the law because:

  • The Law Exposes Sin: Romans 3:20 says, “Through the law comes knowledge of sin.” The law shows us how sinful we are but cannot remove our sin.
  • The Law Cannot Save: James 2:10 tells us that if we break even one part of the law, we are guilty of breaking all of it. No one can perfectly keep God’s law.

2. Justification Through Faith in Christ

Paul gives the solution: we are justified only by faith in Christ. What does this mean?

  • Faith in Christ Means Trusting in His Finished Work: Jesus lived the perfect life we could not live and died the death we deserved. His sacrifice on the cross paid the penalty for our sins (2 Corinthians 5:21).
  • Faith in Christ is Not About Our Efforts: We do not contribute to our salvation. It is a free gift from God (Ephesians 2:8-9).
  • Faith in Christ Brings True Righteousness: When we trust in Christ, God declares us righteous, not because of what we have done, but because of what Christ has done for us (Romans 3:22).

3. Living by Faith, Not Works

Since we are justified by faith, how should we live?

  • Rest in Christ’s Work: Stop striving to earn God’s love through works. Instead, trust in His grace.
  • Obey Out of Love, Not Obligation: We are not saved by works, but we do good works as a response to our salvation (Ephesians 2:10).
  • Reject Legalism: Don’t let religious rules or traditions replace genuine faith in Christ.

Conclusion

Paul’s message in Galatians 2:16 is clear: We are made right with God only through faith in Jesus Christ, not by works of the law. This truth brings freedom and joy, as we no longer have to strive to earn salvation. Instead, we can rest in the finished work of Christ and live a life of gratitude and obedience.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of justification through faith in Christ. Help us to trust in Your grace rather than our own efforts. Strengthen our faith so that we may walk in obedience out of love for You. Keep us from the trap of legalism and let us rest in the righteousness of Christ alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
