The Lord is on my side
Psalm 118:6
Scripture: “The Lord is on my side, I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (Psalm 118:6, NIV)
Introduction:
Psalm 118 is a song of thanksgiving and victory, often read as a declaration of God’s steadfast love and deliverance. Verse 6 is a powerful expression of confidence in the Lord’s protection and faithfulness.
In a world filled with uncertainty and challenges, these words remind us that when God is on our side, we have nothing to fear. Today, we will explore three truths from this verse:
- God’s Presence Gives Us Confidence
- Fear is Defeated by Faith
- God’s Protection is Greater than Man’s Threats
1. God’s Presence Gives Us Confidence
“The Lord is on my side…”
The psalmist declares boldly that God is with him. This isn’t just a theological statement—it’s a deeply personal truth. Knowing that the Creator of the universe is on our side changes everything.
- Application:
- God’s faithfulness: Throughout Scripture, we see God standing by His people, whether it’s delivering Israel from Egypt, protecting David from his enemies, or walking with Daniel in the lion’s den. Do we truly believe that the same God who was faithful to them is faithful to us today?
- God is with us today: Jesus promised in Matthew 28:20, “I am with you always, to the end of the age.” This assurance should fill us with confidence in every situation. How can we live with a greater awareness of God's presence in our daily lives?
2. Fear is Defeated by Faith
“I will not fear…”
Fear is a natural human response to danger or uncertainty, but the psalmist chooses faith over fear. His confidence is not in himself or his circumstances but in God’s power and presence.
- Application:
- Overcoming fear: Fear often stems from feeling alone or powerless. But when we remember that God is with us, our fear begins to lose its grip. As 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” How can we actively replace fear with faith in our hearts and minds?
- Faith in action: Trusting God means stepping out in obedience even when we feel afraid. Whether it’s sharing the gospel, making a difficult decision, or facing opposition, faith empowers us to move forward. What are some areas in your life where fear is holding you back from obeying God?
3. God’s Protection is Greater than Man’s Threats
“What can man do to me?”
This rhetorical question highlights the psalmist’s confidence in God’s ultimate sovereignty. While people may threaten, oppose, or even harm us, their power is limited compared to God’s.
- Application:
- Eternal perspective: Jesus said in Matthew 10:28, “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” No earthly power can separate us from God’s love or His eternal plans. How can we maintain an eternal perspective, especially when facing persecution or opposition?
- Peace in persecution: For believers, this verse is a source of strength in the face of opposition. Like Paul, who declared in Romans 8:31, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” we can face challenges with unshakable peace. How can we cultivate this peace in our hearts, even when facing trials?
Conclusion: Confidence in God’s Victory
Psalm 118:6 is a declaration of trust in God’s presence, power, and protection. When the Lord is on our side, fear loses its power, and the threats of man pale in comparison to God’s sovereignty.
Call to Action:
- If you are facing fear or uncertainty today, take heart in this truth: God is with you. Speak Psalm 118:6 over your situation and trust in His power to deliver you.
- Reflect on areas where fear might be holding you back from living boldly for Christ. Surrender those fears to God and step forward in faith.
Closing Thought:
The Lord is on your side. With Him, you have no reason to fear. Let this truth guide you, embolden you, and fill you with peace as you walk with Him daily.
