Faith as Small as a Mustard Seed

Matthew 17:20

Key Scripture:

“He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’” - Matthew 17:20

Introduction:

In Matthew 17:20, Jesus speaks about the power of faith, using the mustard seed as a symbol. The disciples had failed to cast out a demon, and when they asked Jesus why, He pointed to their lack of faith. Jesus was teaching them—and us—that even a small, genuine faith can accomplish great things when placed in God.

1. The Power of Mustard Seed Faith

Jesus did not say we need huge faith, He said faith as small as a mustard seed is enough.

  • The mustard seed is tiny - yet it grows into a large tree (Matthew 13:31-32).
  • Faith is not about size but about trust - Even small faith in a great God can move mountains.
  • Faith must be planted and nurtured - Just like a seed grows, faith grows through prayer, obedience, and trust in God’s Word.

Application: Do not focus on how big your faith feels—focus on who your faith is in.

2. Faith Moves Mountains

Jesus’ statement about moving mountains was not just symbolic. Mountains represent obstacles, challenges, and impossibilities in our lives.

  • Faith overcomes fear - When we trust God, we stop being controlled by doubt.
  • Faith activates God’s power - Miracles happen when we believe in God’s promises.
  • Faith sees beyond the natural - Even when things seem impossible, God is able (Luke 1:37).

Application: What “mountains” are you facing today? Surrender them to God and trust in His power.

3. How to Grow in Faith

Faith is like a muscle—it grows when we use it.

  • Pray with expectation - Believe that God hears and answers (Mark 11:24).
  • Read and obey God’s Word - “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” (Romans 10:17).
  • Step out in faith - Faith is active, take steps of obedience even when you don’t see immediate results.

Conclusion:

Jesus teaches us that faith, no matter how small, can accomplish the impossible. It is not about having perfect faith but about trusting in a perfect God.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Are there areas in your life where you need to trust God more?
  2. What is one step of faith you can take this week?
  3. How can you strengthen your faith daily?

Closing Prayer:

Lord, thank You for teaching us that even small faith can do great things when placed in You. Help us to trust You more, to grow in faith, and to believe that nothing is impossible with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
