Blessed Are Those Who Believe
John 20:29
Scripture: John 20:29 (NIV)
“Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed, blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’”
Introduction
Doubt is something we all face in our spiritual journey. Thomas, one of Jesus’ disciples, famously struggled to believe in the resurrection without physical proof. Yet, in this passage, Jesus gently corrects him and speaks a powerful truth: those who believe without seeing are truly blessed. This message extends to all of us today.
1. Thomas’s Struggle with Doubt
- After Jesus’ resurrection, He appeared to the disciples, but Thomas was absent (John 20:24-25).
- Thomas refused to believe unless he could see and touch Jesus’ wounds.
- This moment reflects the natural human tendency to doubt what we cannot see.
- Jesus did not condemn Thomas but invited him to believe (John 20:27).
Reflection: Have we ever demanded signs from God before trusting Him? How does doubt affect our faith?
2. Jesus’ Call to Believe Without Seeing
- Jesus acknowledges that Thomas believed because he saw, but He pronounces a greater blessing on those who believe without seeing.
- Faith is trusting in what we do not physically see (Hebrews 11:1).
- Most Christians throughout history, including us today, have not seen Jesus in person, yet we believe.
- This faith connects us deeply to God and brings His blessing.
Reflection: Are we walking by faith or relying only on what we can see and understand?
3. The Blessing of Faith
- Faith brings us into a relationship with Jesus, leading to salvation (Ephesians 2:8).
- Faith allows us to experience God’s peace and guidance, even in uncertainty.
- Faith in the unseen prepares us for an eternal reality where we will one day see Christ face to face (1 Peter 1:8-9).
Reflection: What are the blessings we have experienced because of our faith in Jesus?
Application: How to Strengthen Our Faith
- Trust in God’s Word - Stand firm on Scripture, which testifies to Jesus’ truth.
- Pray for Strength - Ask God to increase your faith and help you overcome doubts.
- Remember Past Faithfulness - Reflect on how God has worked in your life before.
- Surround Yourself with Believers - Fellowship with others who encourage and build your faith.
Conclusion
Thomas’ journey from doubt to belief is a reminder that Jesus meets us where we are. But He also calls us to a greater faith—one that does not depend on seeing but on trusting His word. Let us hold fast to this faith, knowing that in doing so, we are truly blessed.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of faith. Help us to believe in You even when we cannot see. Strengthen our trust in Your promises and let us walk confidently in Your truth. May we live as those who are truly blessed through faith in Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
