Good Friday Message

John 19:30

Scripture: John 19:30 - “When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished.’ Then He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.”

Introduction

Good Friday is a day of deep reflection. It is the day we remember the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. On this day, over 2,000 years ago, Jesus suffered and died to pay the penalty for our sins. It was the darkest moment in history, yet it was also the most glorious—because through His suffering, we receive salvation, forgiveness, and eternal life.

As we meditate on the cross, let us focus on three powerful truths about what Jesus accomplished through His death.

1. The Cross Shows the Depth of God’s Love

Romans 5:8 - “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

The cross is the greatest expression of God’s love. Jesus did not die for the righteous, He died for sinners. He took our place, bore our punishment, and endured the wrath of God so that we could be reconciled to Him.

  • ✔ His love is unconditional - We did nothing to deserve His sacrifice (Ephesians 2:8-9).
  • ✔ His love is sacrificial - He willingly gave His life for us (John 15:13).
  • ✔ His love is personal - He died for each one of us (Galatians 2:20).

When we look at the cross, we see how much God loves us. No sin is too great, no person is too lost—His love reaches us all.

2. The Cross Brings Forgiveness and Redemption

Colossians 1:13-14 - “For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

Sin separated us from God, but through the cross, Jesus made a way for us to be forgiven. His blood paid the price for our sins once and for all.

  • ✔ We are redeemed - Bought back from the power of sin (1 Peter 1:18-19).
  • ✔ We are forgiven - Our sins are removed as far as the east is from the west (Psalm 103:12).
  • ✔ We are made righteous - We stand justified before God (2 Corinthians 5:21).

No matter our past, the cross wipes our slate clean. Jesus bore our sins so that we could be free.

3. The Cross Declares “It Is Finished”

John 19:30 - “It is finished.”

These were the last words of Jesus before He died. He did not say, “I am finished.” He said, “It is finished.” What was finished?

  • ✔ The work of salvation - The price for sin was fully paid.
  • ✔ The power of sin and death - The enemy’s grip was broken (1 Corinthians 15:55-57).
  • ✔ The fulfillment of prophecy - Every promise of the Messiah was completed (Isaiah 53:5).

Because of Good Friday, we no longer have to live in guilt and shame. Jesus finished the work—we simply need to place our faith in Him.

How Should We Respond to the Cross?

  1. Believe in Jesus - Salvation comes through faith in His finished work (Romans 10:9).
  2. Repent of Sin - The cross calls us to turn away from sin and live for God (Acts 3:19).
  3. Live in Gratitude - We should never take His sacrifice for granted (Galatians 2:20).
  4. Share the Good News - The world needs to hear about the love of Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:20).

Conclusion: The Cross Leads to Resurrection

Good Friday is a day of mourning, but it is not the end of the story. Sunday is coming! The cross was necessary, but the resurrection is the victory. Jesus died, but He rose again, proving that He is Lord over sin, death, and the grave!

Let us take time today to reflect, repent, and rejoice in the power of the cross.

Closing Prayer:

“Heavenly Father, we thank You for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and redemption. Help us to live in the power of the cross and to share this great news with the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
