Overcoming Obstacles to Healing and Change
John 5:6-7
Scripture:
“When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, ‘Do you want to get well?’
‘Sir,’ the invalid replied, ‘I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.’” - John 5:6-7
Introduction
In John 5, Jesus encounters a man paralyzed for 38 years, waiting by the pool of Bethesda for healing. When Jesus asks, “Do you want to get well?” the man’s response reveals his focus on obstacles—no one to help him and others always getting to the pool first. His story shows how we often let obstacles prevent us from receiving the healing and transformation Jesus offers. This passage reminds us that while obstacles are real, they are no match for Jesus’ power.
1. The Reality of Obstacles in Our Lives
The man at the pool faced significant obstacles:
- Physical Limitations: Paralyzed, he couldn’t reach the healing waters on his own.
- Social Limitations: He had no one to help him, leaving him isolated and hopeless.
- Circumstantial Limitations: Others always got to the pool first, making him feel overlooked.
Like this man, we face obstacles:
- Personal Struggles: Illness, addiction, or emotional pain.
- External Barriers: Lack of support, opportunities, or resources.
- Internal Barriers: Doubt, fear, or past hurts that keep us stuck.
While obstacles are real, they don’t have to define us or keep us from Jesus’ healing.
Reflection: What obstacles are holding you back? How can you shift your focus from the problem to the solution in Christ?
2. The Danger of Focusing on the Obstacles
The man’s response to Jesus reveals his fixation on the obstacles: “I have no one to help me.” He was so consumed by his limitations that he couldn’t see Jesus, the solution standing before him.
Similarly, we often focus on our challenges—financial struggles, broken relationships, or personal failures—and lose sight of God’s power. Like Peter walking on water (Matthew 14:30), we sink when we take our eyes off Jesus and focus on the storm.
Reflection: Are you fixated on your obstacles or on Jesus’ power to overcome them? How can you refocus your heart and mind on Him?
3. Jesus Offers a Way Through the Obstacles
Jesus doesn’t criticize the man for his focus on obstacles. Instead, He simply says, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” Jesus didn’t need the pool or anyone’s help to heal the man. His word and power were enough.
This shows that Jesus can overcome any obstacle—physical, emotional, or circumstantial. His power transcends our limitations, and He is always the solution.
Reflection: Do you believe Jesus can overcome your obstacles? How can you trust Him more fully in your current struggles?
4. Responding to Jesus Beyond the Obstacles
When Jesus told the man to get up, He challenged him to take action. The man could have stayed focused on his obstacles, but he chose to obey Jesus’ command. His obedience led to radical transformation.
Jesus calls us to respond in faith too. This might mean seeking help, forgiving someone, or letting go of the past. It requires trusting that Jesus is bigger than our obstacles and can make a way where there seems to be none.
Reflection: What step of faith is Jesus calling you to take? How can you move beyond your obstacles and trust Him for breakthrough?
Conclusion: Overcoming Obstacles Through Faith
John 5:6-7 reminds us that obstacles, no matter how big, don’t have to prevent us from receiving God’s healing and transformation. While it’s easy to focus on our limitations, Jesus calls us to look beyond them to Him, the One who can do the impossible.
Are you facing obstacles today? Jesus is asking you, “Do you want to get well?” The choice is yours to trust Him and take a step of faith. He is ready to heal, restore, and make a way.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your power to overcome all obstacles. We confess that we often focus more on our barriers than on Your ability to heal and transform us. Help us to trust You completely, step out in faith, and allow You to move in our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
