The Living and Powerful Word of God

Hebrews 10:35

Scripture: Hebrews 10:35 (NIV)

“So do not throw away your confidence, it will be richly rewarded.”

Introduction

In life, we all face challenges that test our faith, resolve, and perseverance. Sometimes the journey feels too difficult, and we may be tempted to give up or doubt the promises of God. In these moments, Hebrews 10:35 calls us to hold on to our confidence in God, knowing that it will lead to a reward. The writer of Hebrews encourages believers to continue trusting in God, even when the path is uncertain, because our faith has a great reward.

Today, we will look at why we must not throw away our confidence, the rewards that come from perseverance, and how we can strengthen our faith in times of trial.

1. Understanding the Meaning of Confidence

  • Confidence in Christ: The confidence we are called to hold on to is not self-reliance or pride, but the assurance that comes from knowing Jesus Christ and trusting in His promises.
  • Our Position in Christ: As believers, we have been made righteous through Christ’s sacrifice. Our confidence comes from the truth that we are forgiven and accepted by God (Hebrews 10:19-22).
  • Confidence in God’s Faithfulness: We are not confident in our own abilities, but in God’s unwavering faithfulness to keep His promises. God has promised never to leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).

Reflection: What is your source of confidence? Is it grounded in Christ or in your own strength?

2. The Temptation to Throw Away Our Confidence

  • Persecution and Hardship: The original audience of Hebrews was enduring persecution and trials for their faith. The temptation to throw away their confidence was real, especially when following Christ brought suffering.
  • Fear and Doubt: When life gets tough, we often struggle with doubt and fear. We may question God’s plan for us or feel discouraged when things are not going the way we expected.
  • The Danger of Losing Confidence: If we throw away our confidence, we lose the strength to persevere. We give in to the lie that God is not with us or that His promises are not true.

Reflection: Are you in a season of doubt or discouragement? How can you hold on to your confidence in God’s promises during hard times?

3. The Reward for Perseverance

  • A Rich Reward: Hebrews 10:35 tells us that if we do not throw away our confidence, it will be richly rewarded. This reward is not just a future hope in heaven, but also the peace, joy, and strength that come from living in faith.
  • Spiritual Growth: Perseverance through trials strengthens our character and deepens our relationship with God (Romans 5:3-5). The reward is not just material or circumstantial, but spiritual.
  • The Promise of God’s Presence: As we persevere, we grow more aware of God’s presence with us, His comfort, and His peace. The reward is not always an immediate change in circumstances, but an intimate relationship with God.

Reflection: Have you experienced the reward of persevering in faith? How has God shown His faithfulness to you in times of trial?

4. How to Keep Our Confidence in God

  • Remember God’s Past Faithfulness: When facing trials, look back on how God has been faithful in your life. Recall the times He has provided, protected, and strengthened you. His past faithfulness encourages us to trust Him in the present (Psalm 77:11-12).
  • Focus on God’s Promises: Meditate on the promises of God, knowing that they are sure and unchanging. The Bible is full of promises that remind us of God’s goodness and faithfulness (2 Corinthians 1:20).
  • Encourage One Another: Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us to encourage one another, especially when we face difficulties. Community plays a vital role in helping us maintain our confidence in God.

Reflection: Are you encouraging others in their faith? How can you strengthen your own confidence by focusing on God’s promises?

Conclusion

Hebrews 10:35 reminds us that our confidence in Christ is worth holding on to, no matter the circumstances. When we are tempted to doubt, give up, or turn away, we must remember that our confidence in God will bring us a rich reward. This reward is both eternal and present, bringing spiritual growth, peace, and a deeper relationship with God.

As we persevere in faith, let us keep our eyes on the ultimate reward—the presence of God and His promises fulfilled in our lives. Do not throw away your confidence, hold on to it, for it will be richly rewarded.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the assurance that our confidence in You is never in vain. Help us to hold on to Your promises and trust in Your faithfulness, especially in times of trial. Strengthen our hearts to persevere, knowing that the reward of being with You is worth every struggle. May we encourage one another and grow in faith as we journey together. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
