Approaching God’s Throne with Confidence

Hebrews 4:16

Scripture: Hebrews 4:16 (NIV)

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Introduction

Many people struggle with feelings of unworthiness when coming to God in prayer. They feel too sinful, too weak, or too distant from Him. But Hebrews 4:16 gives us a powerful invitation: to approach God’s throne with confidence. Through Christ, we have unrestricted access to the Father, where we receive mercy and grace in our times of need.

Today, we will explore what it means to approach God with confidence, why we can do so, and what we receive when we come to Him.

1. We Have Access to God’s Throne

  • In the Old Testament, only the high priest could enter the Most Holy Place once a year to seek atonement for the people. But Jesus, our High Priest, has made a way for all of us to come directly to God.
  • Matthew 27:51 tells us that when Jesus died, the temple veil was torn in two, symbolizing that we now have direct access to God.
  • Because of Christ’s sacrifice, we no longer need a human mediator—we can come to God ourselves in prayer.

Reflection: Do we fully appreciate the privilege of coming before God anytime, anywhere?

2. We Approach with Confidence, Not Fear

  • The verse tells us to come with confidence, not hesitation or fear. This confidence is not based on our righteousness but on Jesus’ finished work on the cross.
  • Many hesitate to pray because of guilt or shame, but Romans 8:1 reminds us that “there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
  • Confidence in prayer means trusting that God welcomes us, hears us, and desires to help us.

Reflection: Are we praying boldly, trusting that God is eager to hear us?

3. We Receive Mercy and Grace

  • Mercy: God does not give us the punishment we deserve. Instead, He forgives and restores us when we come to Him.
  • Grace: God gives us what we do not deserve—His strength, provision, guidance, and blessings.
  • In our “time of need,” whether we are struggling with sin, trials, or uncertainty, God’s grace is sufficient (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Reflection: Are we turning to God in our times of need, or do we try to handle things on our own?

4. Practical Ways to Approach God’s Throne

  1. Pray Continually - Make prayer a regular part of your life, not just in times of crisis (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
  2. Come with Thanksgiving - Thank God for His grace and mercy, even before you receive your answers (Philippians 4:6).
  3. Believe in His Promises - Stand on God’s Word, trusting that He is faithful to help in our time of need (James 1:6).
  4. Confess and Seek Forgiveness - Approach with a humble heart, confessing sins and trusting in His mercy (1 John 1:9).

Conclusion

Hebrews 4:16 is an open invitation to approach God with boldness, knowing that He is ready to pour out His mercy and grace. We don’t have to come timidly or fearfully—Jesus has made the way for us to enter into God’s presence with confidence.

Let us not neglect this incredible privilege but come before Him daily, trusting in His love and faithfulness.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege of coming before Your throne of grace. Help us to approach You with confidence, trusting in Your mercy and grace. Strengthen our faith, guide our steps, and meet us in our times of need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
