Confidence in the Lord*

Hebrews 13:6

Text: Hebrews 13:6 - “So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?’”

Introduction

Fear is something we all experience—fear of the future, fear of failure, fear of people’s opinions. But Hebrews 13:6 reminds us that as believers, we can live with confidence and courage because God is our helper. Today, we will explore three key truths from this verse:

  • God Is Our Helper
  • We Do Not Have to Fear
  • People Cannot Shake Our Faith

I. God Is Our Helper

The verse begins with a powerful declaration: “The Lord is my helper.”

  • God Is Always Present - He never abandons us (Deuteronomy 31:6).
  • God Provides for Our Needs - Just as He fed Elijah and provided for Israel in the wilderness, He will take care of us (Philippians 4:19).
  • God Strengthens Us in Trials - He helps us endure difficult times (Isaiah 41:10).

Reflection: Are you depending on God as your helper, or are you trying to handle life on your own?

II. We Do Not Have to Fear

Because God is our helper, we can boldly declare, “I will not be afraid.”

  • Fear Weakens, But Faith Strengthens - When we trust God, fear loses its grip (Psalm 56:3).
  • God’s Love Casts Out Fear - Perfect love drives out fear (1 John 4:18).
  • Jesus Gives Us Peace - In John 14:27, Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Reflection: What fears are holding you back? Give them to God and trust in His power.

III. People Cannot Shake Our Faith

The verse ends with a powerful question: “What can mere mortals do to me?”

  • People May Oppose Us, But God Is Greater - No one can stop God’s plan for your life (Romans 8:31).
  • Persecution Cannot Defeat Us - Many have suffered for Christ, but their faith remained strong (Matthew 5:10-12).
  • Our True Security Is in God - People can take away material things, but they cannot take away our salvation (John 10:28).

Reflection: Are you more focused on what people think or what God says about you?

Conclusion

Hebrews 13:6 gives us confidence in uncertain times:

  • God is our helper—He is always with us.
  • We do not need to fear—His power is greater than any challenge.
  • People cannot shake our faith—our security is in Christ.

Let us walk in boldness, knowing that God is for us!

Amen!
