The Name of the Lord: Our Strong Tower

Proverbs 18:10

Text: Proverbs 18:10 (NIV) “The name of the Lord is a fortified tower, the righteous run to it and are safe.”

Introduction

Life is full of challenges, uncertainties, and dangers. In times of trouble, people seek security in different things—wealth, power, relationships, or personal abilities. However, Proverbs 18:10 reminds us that the ultimate place of safety is in the name of the Lord. This verse paints a vivid picture of God as our strong tower, providing refuge and protection for those who trust in Him.

Today, we will explore three key truths from this passage:

  1. The Power of God’s Name
  2. The Urgency of Running to Him
  3. The Security Found in Him

I. The Power of God’s Name

“The name of the Lord is a fortified tower…”

In the Bible, a person’s name represents their character, reputation, and authority. The “name of the Lord” signifies His divine attributes—His strength, faithfulness, mercy, and power. When we call upon His name, we are calling upon His very nature and presence.

Biblical Example: In Exodus 3:14, God revealed His name to Moses as “I AM WHO I AM,” signifying His eternal and unchanging nature. This means that whatever we need—provision, healing, peace, or protection—God is able to provide.

Application: Do we truly rely on the name of the Lord? In times of trouble, we must remember that God’s name carries power and authority over every situation in our lives.

II. The Urgency of Running to Him

“The righteous run to it…”

The word “run” implies urgency and intentionality. It means that in times of trouble, the righteous do not hesitate but immediately seek refuge in God. Running to the Lord signifies complete dependence on Him rather than on worldly solutions.

Biblical Example: King Hezekiah faced a great crisis when the Assyrian army threatened Jerusalem (2 Kings 19). Instead of relying on his military strength, he ran to the Lord in prayer. God responded by delivering Israel miraculously.

Application: When challenges arise, do we run to God first, or do we rely on our own strength? Let us cultivate the habit of seeking God immediately, knowing that He is our refuge.

III. The Security Found in Him

“And are safe.”

A fortified tower in biblical times was a place of ultimate security, built to withstand attacks and provide protection. Likewise, when we take refuge in God, we are shielded from the attacks of the enemy—whether they be spiritual, emotional, or physical.

Biblical Example: In Psalm 91:2, the psalmist declares, “I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” Those who abide in God’s presence will experience His divine protection.

Application: True safety is found in God alone. Money, power, or human wisdom cannot guarantee security, but trusting in God’s name brings peace and assurance in all circumstances.

Conclusion

Proverbs 18:10 is a powerful reminder that God is our ultimate place of safety. His name represents His strength and faithfulness. When we face difficulties, we must run to Him without hesitation, knowing that He alone can provide true security.

Let us choose to trust in the Lord daily, finding peace in the truth that His name is our strong tower.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for being our strong tower. Help us to trust in Your name and to run to You in times of trouble. Remind us that our true security is found in You alone. Strengthen our faith, and let us experience Your protection and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
