The Advocate – Our Helper and Guide
John 16:7
Scripture: John 16:7 (NIV)
“But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you.”
Introduction
As Jesus prepared His disciples for His departure, He reassured them that they would not be left alone. He promised to send the Comforter, also known as the Advocate—the Holy Spirit. This was not just a temporary helper, but the very presence of God, sent to empower, guide, and convict the world.
1. The Advocate Convicts the World (John 16:8-11)
Jesus explains that when the Holy Spirit comes, He will convict the world of three things:
- Sin - The Spirit reveals the truth about sin, especially the sin of unbelief in Christ. Without His conviction, people remain blind to their need for salvation.
- Righteousness - The Spirit testifies of Christ’s righteousness, showing that He alone is the standard of holiness. Since Jesus returned to the Father, the Spirit now reveals His righteousness to the world.
- Judgment - The Holy Spirit declares that Satan, the ruler of this world, has already been judged and defeated. Those who reject Christ will share in that judgment.
Reflection: Are we allowing the Holy Spirit to convict and transform us, leading us away from sin and toward righteousness?
2. The Advocate Guides Us into All Truth (John 16:13)
Jesus describes the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Truth, who leads believers into a deeper understanding of God’s Word and will.
- The Spirit reveals God’s truth, helping us understand Scripture and apply it to our lives.
- He does not speak independently but speaks what He hears from the Father and Son, ensuring that we remain in alignment with God’s will.
- In a world filled with deception, we need the Holy Spirit to discern truth from falsehood.
Reflection: Are we relying on the Holy Spirit to guide us in truth, or are we being led by worldly influences?
3. The Advocate Glorifies Christ (John 16:14-15)
Jesus states that the Holy Spirit’s mission is to glorify Him.
- The Spirit directs our attention to Jesus, helping us understand His love, grace, and power.
- He takes what belongs to Christ and reveals it to us, making the truths of the Gospel personal and transformative.
- Our role is to be receptive to the Spirit’s work, allowing Him to shape us into the image of Christ.
Reflection: Are we allowing the Holy Spirit to glorify Christ in our lives by reflecting His character and love to the world?
Application: How to Walk with the Advocate Daily
- Be Sensitive to His Conviction - When the Holy Spirit reveals sin, respond with repentance.
- Seek His Guidance in Truth - Study the Word with a prayerful heart, asking the Spirit for wisdom.
- Live to Glorify Christ - Allow the Spirit to shape your actions, words, and character.
- Depend on His Power - Don’t try to live the Christian life in your own strength, rely on the Spirit’s help.
Conclusion
Jesus knew that His followers would need help beyond their own strength, so He sent the Advocate—the Holy Spirit. He convicts, guides, and glorifies Christ in our lives. Let us walk daily with Him, allowing Him to lead us into truth and transform us for God’s glory.
Closing Prayer
