Submit to God and Resist the Devil

James 4:7

Text: James 4:7 (NIV) - “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Introduction

This short but powerful verse from James contains two commands and a promise. It calls us to submit to God, resist the devil, and assures us that when we do, the enemy will flee. In a world filled with temptations and spiritual battles, this verse teaches us how to stand firm in our faith.

Today, we will explore three key lessons from James 4:7:

  • The Power of Submission to God
  • The Necessity of Resisting the Devil
  • The Victory Found in God’s Promise

1. The Power of Submission to God

The first step to overcoming the enemy is submission to God. But what does this mean?

  • Submission means surrendering to God’s will - Instead of relying on our own wisdom, we choose to trust and obey God’s Word (Proverbs 3:5-6).
  • Submission requires humility - James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” A heart that humbly submits to God is open to His guidance and blessings.
  • Submission is an act of faith - It means trusting that God’s plans are better than our own (Jeremiah 29:11).

Application:

Are there areas in your life where you are resisting God instead of submitting to Him? Surrendering to God is the first step toward victory.

2. The Necessity of Resisting the Devil

James also commands us to resist the devil. Many Christians struggle because they fail to actively oppose the enemy.

  • Satan is real and actively seeks to destroy - 1 Peter 5:8 warns us that the devil is like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
  • Resisting the devil requires spiritual discipline - Ephesians 6:11 tells us to put on the full armor of God to stand against the devil’s schemes.
  • Jesus is our example - In Matthew 4, Jesus resisted the devil by using Scripture. We, too, must stand on God’s Word.

Application:

Are you actively resisting temptation and spiritual attacks, or are you allowing sin to creep into your life? Victory comes through resistance, not passivity.

3. The Victory Found in God’s Promise

James gives us an incredible promise: when we submit to God and resist the devil, he will flee.

  • The enemy has no power over a submitted believer - When we stand firm in Christ, the devil must retreat (1 John 4:4).
  • God’s power is greater than Satan’s attacks - When we call on the name of Jesus, the enemy cannot stand (Philippians 2:10).
  • Consistent submission and resistance lead to lasting freedom - The more we draw near to God, the weaker the enemy’s grip becomes.

Application:

Are you walking in the victory God has promised? The enemy will only flee if you take action—submit to God and resist!

Conclusion

James 4:7 is a battle plan for spiritual victory:

  • Submit to God - Surrender your life fully to Him.
  • Resist the devil - Stand firm against temptation and lies.
  • Trust in God’s promise - When you do, the enemy will flee!

Victory is not found in our strength but in our willingness to submit to God and trust in His power. Let’s commit today to living in obedience and standing firm in faith.

Amen!
