The Abundant Life in Christ

John 10:10

Scripture: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy, I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” - John 10:10

Introduction

In John 10:10, Jesus makes a profound statement about His mission: He came to give life—abundant life. In contrast, He describes the thief, whose purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy. This verse presents a clear choice: will we allow the thief to rob us, or will we embrace the life that Jesus offers?

Today, we will explore three key themes in this verse: the thief’s purpose, Jesus’ mission, and what it means to live the abundant life.

  1. The Thief’s Purpose: To Steal, Kill, and Destroy

Jesus warns us about the thief, representing anything that seeks to pull us away from God. This thief can be:

  • Satan: The enemy deceives, tempts, and leads people into sin (1 Peter 5:8).
  • Sin: Sin promises pleasure but ultimately steals our peace, joy, and purpose (Romans 6:23).
  • The World’s Lies: The world tells us that success, money, and pleasure bring fulfillment, but these things can leave us empty.

The thief’s goal is to steal our joy, kill our hope, and destroy our relationship with God. But Jesus offers something radically different.

  1. Jesus’ Mission: Life to the Full

Jesus declares, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” This is not just existence but abundant life—a life overflowing with purpose, joy, and peace in Him.

What does this abundant life look like?

  • Eternal Life: Through Jesus, we receive salvation and the promise of eternity with God (John 3:16).
  • Spiritual Fulfillment: We are no longer searching for meaning—Jesus satisfies our deepest needs (John 6:35).
  • Peace in Trials: The abundant life doesn’t mean an easy life, but it does mean peace and strength in the midst of hardships (John 16:33).
  • Transformation: When we walk with Jesus, our lives are changed—we grow in love, joy, and righteousness (Galatians 5:22-23).

Jesus’ abundant life isn’t about material wealth or worldly success, it’s about a deep, rich relationship with Him.

  1. Living the Abundant Life

How do we experience this life that Jesus offers?

  • By Following the Good Shepherd: Jesus, in John 10, describes Himself as the Good Shepherd. When we listen to His voice and follow Him, we walk in the fullness of life (John 10:11, 27).
  • By Staying Connected to Him: In John 15:5, Jesus says, “I am the vine, you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.” Our life is abundant when we stay rooted in Christ.
  • By Rejecting the Lies of the Thief: We must guard our hearts against deception and distractions that steal our joy and purpose. This means staying in God’s Word, praying, and living in obedience.

Conclusion: Choosing Life in Christ

John 10:10 presents a choice: we can allow the thief to rob us, or we can embrace the abundant life Jesus offers. Jesus came so that we could live fully—both now and for eternity.

Are you experiencing this life in Christ? Or have you allowed the thief to steal your joy and purpose? Today, Jesus invites you to walk in the fullness of life that only He can give.

Closing Prayer
