Joy : Fruit Of The Spirit
Galatians 5:22-23
Text: Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV)
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”
Introduction
We live in a world that confuses joy with happiness.
Happiness is when you find money in your coat pocket.
Joy is when you’re broke but still trust God will provide.
Happiness is based on what’s happening.
Joy is rooted in Who is living inside you.
That’s why Paul lists joy as a fruit of the Spirit.
It’s not something you fake—it’s something that grows when the Holy Spirit is alive and working in you.
Point 1: Joy Is Not Circumstantial—It’s Spiritual
Paul, the same guy who wrote about joy, was writing from prison! Not exactly a vacation spot. But in Philippians 4:4, he says:
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”
How? Because his joy wasn’t in his comfort—it was in Christ.
His surroundings didn’t determine his spirit. His Savior did.
That kind of joy isn’t glued to a perfect life, it’s anchored in a perfect Savior.
Point 2: Joy Grows from Gratitude
Joy and gratitude are like spiritual siblings.
You can’t be joyful without being thankful.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says:
“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances…”
Notice: it doesn’t say give thanks for all circumstances, but in all circumstances.
Why? Because even when life gets weird, God is still good.
Gratitude waters the roots of joy in our hearts.
Point 3: Joy Is Contagious and Courageous
When people see your joy even in trials, they get curious.
Real joy makes people ask, “What do you have that I don’t?”
Nehemiah 8:10 says:
“The joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Joy doesn’t make you soft—it makes you strong.
Joy is what helped Jesus endure the cross:
“For the joy set before Him…” (Hebrews 12:2)
That’s the power of Spirit-filled joy—it doesn’t deny the storm, it dances in the rain.
Conclusion
Joy isn’t about faking a smile—it’s about walking with Jesus.
The closer you are to Him, the deeper your joy runs.
Life may shake you, but joy holds you steady.
So, if your joy feels low, don’t go chasing feelings—go chase Jesus.
Spend time with Him, and watch joy rise like the sun.
Closing Prayer
Father,
Thank You for the gift of joy that doesn’t depend on what’s around us, but on Who is within us.
Holy Spirit, fill us with joy that overflows—even in hard times.
Remind us daily that the joy of the Lord is our strength.
Help us live joyfully, love deeply, and reflect You clearly.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
